In case of black tea, you shouldn't ever clean the patina (tannin deposits) from a teapot. If you use the same teapot for different types of tea, then yes, you should keep it free of deposits.

How about coffee stains?
The tannin patina contributes to the flavor of the tea when brewing it. Never heard anybody claiming this about coffee, but I'm primarily a tea drinker.
