After cleaning with vinegar a lot of rinsing is required to get rid of the flavor. A citric acid cleaning requires less rinsing afterwards.

I ran hydrogen peroxide through mine and could not believe how clean it made everything. It beat the over the counter coffee cleaner products.

Well ok, 3 or 4 hoods over. One of my points against reeking acetic acid in the first place.

CLR in both coffeemaker and dishwasher about twice a month. Citric acid works well also but is more difficult to find.

Pabs, re your alkali and organics.

When we are commissioning the half tonne per second kettles at work, the first chemical to go in is TSP, to get rid of any organics and oils in the tubing. Local tourist railway use sodium carbonate.

Was that the 3% mouth cleaner H2O2 or the real stuff? Or something in between?

I had a cheap espresso maker for 10 years without any cleaning and it still works, but I have no idea how bad it looked inside.

I have a newer espresso maker I bought almost 2 years ago, it had been used almost everyday and it also never had been cleaned with anything. I need to look for the manual to see what do they recommend to clean.

What do you guys recommend for cleaning an espresso maker ? It is Breville ESP8XL Cafe Roma Espresso Machine.

Used the 3% hydrogen peroxide tonight, and then followed up with a 50-50 mix of cheap vinegar. Tomorrow I'll do a few rinses with clean water.

Sooo much junk and particulates in the carafe, I guess now was a good time.

Well, I ran some citric acid solution through my coffee maker followed by a couple runs of trisodium phosphate solution to neutralize the acid, then ran plain water through it.

The TSP runs had the most amount of goop floating in 'em FWIW. Methinks it needs a second treatment but it is a definite improvement...

Well, citric acid is a pretty "green" cleaner, but TSP is not.
