Drag race in going to say your probably right. I think we tend to look to much at the chemicals.how it looks on paper does not necessarily mean it works in the real world.

I was a diehard Valvoline conventional fan for years and used it exclusively until 2004 when the price difference between Valvoline ($3 qt) and Shell ($0.99 qt) got too high. I read something on an oil forum *somewhere* (probably here) that there wasn't much difference between the oils.
I never had any sign of varnish much less sludge with the Valvoline, but I did have varnish form in both the Dodge Caravan and the Chevy Prizm with the Shell formulation at the time. This was probably SL-rated Shell 5w30, so it's not really comparable to todays formulations, but a few years back my experiences favored Valvoline.

My favorite gear oils, ATF and what not are always Valvoline brand, but I find it hard to get excited about their motor oil with the weak (or mystery) add packs. I sure wouldn't lose any sleep if I had Valvoline in the crankcase though.

Even though the add-pack appears weak, they still perform well. My father uses nothing but GTX and has since before I was born. Never an oil related issue. My father-in-law just got rid of his 2005 honda minivan with 280k on the clock. It used GTX for 95% of it's life. Still ran strong and didn't use any oil when he traded in for a new one.
I'm in the same boat as most of the members on here that I want to "SEE" whats in the oil. But, just because it does not show up on a used oil analysis or VOA does not mean they are bad, they have a loyal following and have had for decades.

I've seen the oposite when helping a buddy of mine put rod and main bearings in his mom's minivan. It is a 05 Caravan with the 3.8. It just started to spin one of the rod bearings and thats why we were replacing them. Shes owned it since new and the first year she owned it, had a fuel injector stick open. It diluted the oil pretty bad and we think some damage was done back then. It started making noise at around 140,000miles. Anyways, when we had it apart, there was a lot of varnish in it and its had nothing but Valvoline Synpower 5w30 in it, changed every 5,000-7,000miles with lots of mixed driving. Maybe it wasn't the oils fault, might just be an inherent thing in the 3.8 itself, but it kinda turned me off from their oil.

Did your friend fix the intake pan yet? Those are known to leak on the magnum family engines. It's time consuming but worth it in the long run.

I`v seen motors taken apart that had Castrol GTX exclusively and were spotless inside.
Nope its never been done to our knowledge. There freind owned it for the first two years of its life. If it wasnt done then its never been done.

Try not to worry cuz I've noticed allot of people on this forum have a tendency to bark there own opinions and chisel apart each brands of oil on the market to figure out which is best.
I've used Valvoline oil before in the past and found it to be an excellent oil to use just like all the others brands. Now a days we produce some of the most complex formulas in the world and sometimes I think we have a tendency to over engineer oils.
Your buddies pick is just fine and I suggest he stay with the brand he chooses unless he has some type of particular concern. His engine is clean and will continue to have a clean engine as long as he stick to his regiment of OCI.

I like all the folks posting here saying how great the oil is in their cars but having random people claim something on the intenetz is comical ...Show me some general FACTS about what makes the product great, you know likes what's in it.
