So today I helped a buddy of mine do a valve cover gasket on a 97 ram has had oil changed every 5000 valvoline conventional. Has 186k on it and that engine looked like new. No varnish or build up no where. I know valvoline gets a hard time on here but from my observation it cleans pretty [censored] well. What yalll think.

A lot of people on here put more emphasis on friction modifiers like Moly than on the detergent factor ...I tend to be more concerned with detergency I do know that Valvoline Conventional has a good shot of sodium in it which is a detergent.

I don't think Valvoline has anything to do with it. Most engines that have minimal maintenance look like that as well

What has the driving pattern been like?

I think we can all conjure up images of clean vs. dirty engines. It's really not that hard. People have said before the have an average of 1/8" accumulation of sludge on the inside of the engine. I don't need a picture to understand what he or she is saying. Furthermore, most of us can picture that scene. Though I did notice the cute graphic has smilies holding up the signs, so I wouldn't consider it snooty. Like rjacket said; "What has the driving pattern been like?"

Drives all over:) idk how to upload pics or I would have gottensome pics. Picture a brand new 318 and cost it in oil :) literally looked brand spanking new. It uses about a quart in 5000 miles to. Awesome truck. Its the truck in buying in a few weeks. He changed the gasket because it had a little grime on the back. Probabky leaked a drop a year. It is super clean.

Alot of oils on this forums get criticized when in reality, there's NOTHING wrong with them. Valvoline is a great oil, despite what might be said on this forum.

It probably is a good oil..BUT it would be nice if Ashland would offer up a little more about what makes it good..like what is in it.

As many have been saying, many basic oils are now fine for most applications, especially with 6 month / 5000 mile ocis. That's what advancements in engines, engine oils and competition do for you. At the same time, the oil manufacturer's need us to buy more expensive oils because ~$12 for PYB, VWB, QSGB is half what they could be getting. All manufacturer's in every line of business want to upsell value whether real or perceived to the consumer. Selectively releasing information across the range of oils to optimize what they sell overall is precisely what is in their interest. The big manufacturer's are not going to release all the information. If they released all the information they had, then two things would happen: 1) It would give the competition more marketing ammunition 2) It would lead most of the oil nerds to buy the cheapest oils They are probably more worried about 1) than 2). For those who are really interested in the details, perhaps approach the smaller manufacturers directly who would love to get a foothold in the nerd market.

I could care less whats in it. I've seen what it does to protect as far as clearances of motors in many different vehicles that have used it. Thats what's important and the ability to keep engines clean, which I have also seen,in both street and race applications. Doing tear downs of motors is more valueable then anything else.

We tore down many engines that have used valvoline in the past, most look good, being a roundy round race car motor or grocery getter. I should've took pictures I guess, who would've known they would've came in so handy for a forum like this.
