Christmas shopping at Sears 1982

Every year as a kid I could hardly wait for the Sears Xmas toy catalog to come in the mail. Wore them out looking at all the loot!
It's 1982 and I'm looking at the star wars toys in the catalogs.
From when I was a kid in the 50's, up until about 10 years ago, people would go shopping on Black Friday mostly because that's when the stores would put out all of their Christmas decorations, products, and sales......
Fast forward to today, and the Christmas stuff starts coming out after Labor Day. The whole holiday season has become nothing more than a commercialized racket.

A microwave on sale for $399. There is a parking lot shot at the end. Probably not a single 4WD to be seen and maybe 2 trucks.
born in 1980, I was into the Go Bots and Transformers early on, then it was GameBoy/Tetris. Was raised on the best generation of things to come out for kids as far as toys go. Cap guns,things that sparked, Tonka Truck, slot car, etc.
The Sears Christmas catalogue in the 60’s and 70’s was magical. We also had an Eaton’s catalogue in Canada. Thanks for bringing back those memories.
Sears was a great catalog, but I always preferred the Kay’s Merchandise catalog. They had RC airplanes in theirs!
I was also a toy tractor nut as a kid, so the Farm and Fleet catalog was also major excitement. I still have all of those toy tractors today!

Me too, Sears was my first stop for most everything.
The first centerfire rifle I ever bought was a Winchester Model 94 in .30-30 Win. from Sears in 1971. It cost $99.00 new. They only had the display model left, and it was missing a front sight hood.
So the salesman gave me a whopping $15.00 off. I grabbed it, and drove to my local gun shop on the way home. The gunsmith there installed a new front sight hood while I waited for just $3.00. I still have that rifle.

When we were kids we would drool over the toys in the Sears catalogs. I remember the toys looked better in the book than they did in person and were really quite junky and cheap. We did mail order anything except maybe seeds for the garden. As kids we would drool over the gun's for sale.
Also liked the Mongomery Ward catalog too..
In 1982 I wasn't even a swimmer yet. Not until a 83 sometime

The big three dominate but also see a Datsun, a Volvo and a MG.
In the '60's and '70's, Sears was one of the most respected retailers in the country. Whether it was clothing, tools, home improvement or appliances, you could buy with Sears with confidence that they would stand behind what they sold.

Agreed huge failing.
Brings back a lot of memories, Kenmore washer/dryers, big bulky microwaves, ATARI computers.
Guns and ammo too. Oh the horror!
