Well with much delight and some help from me,my daughter purchased a brand new(left over) 04 Aveo with a 1.6L engine coupled to a five speed manual transmission.. I dutifully volunteered as oil change jockey and my offer was accepted.

She drives 1 mile to work and 1 mile home with very, very, very few long trips,20 min or more, and lots of stop and go.I have decided to stick to 3k oci's using M1 5w30 or 0w30 but,I was thinknig of dumping the factory fill at 1 k and refilling with a dino oil, leave that for 2k and then go to the M1,most likely a uoa after the first 3k run of M1 and the more I think about it,after each oc..For my first change at 1k is okay to use some maxlife 5w30 ??? I got it free and can't think of anything else to use it in and well I was thinking of just using it up..

Your thoughts are appreciated..

Anyone know alot about these engines???? I see a GM/Daewoo oil filter so I assume a Korean engine????

I've heard many things about these engines.. and I don't know what it is!!!

I had a 2001 Daewoo Lanos with the similar engine.. first i heard its a Australian Holden Engine and Transmission. Then I heard its a Daewoo Engine with a GM Transmission.. then I heard its a Opel Engine with a GM Transmission.. then I heard its a Daewoo Engine and Transsmission.. in my oopinion.. its a Daewoo engine and tranny. that car has been very good with me and Reliability on these engines now are far more superior(It got ran over by a Dump truck). If i were you,, just go with the Dino oil every 3,000 miles.

We had a couple of these for training and test fleet use. They are hands down huge improvment over the GEO metro's they replace!!! I think I would not bother with M1 if 3000 mile oil changes are in order! I think I would use thier Mobil Clean 7500 if you want a Mobil product! 3000 miles oil change is a no brainer for most oils. Havoline and Chevron Supreme have also been great on this site.

Longterm I have no idea! I was impressed with the basic engine design for a compact econo car. It incorperated a lot of design elements from much more expensive engines from Honda and Toyota. The Koreans have really been working hard to improve their quality, durability and power output! LEt us know how it goes. I think we have one UOA for a Aveo on this site!

Thanks for the input guys...I will more than likely go with the Mobil 7500,it's seems a real good buy.

Any thoughts on the maxlife useage at 1k???? Don't know if it's a waste of an additive rich oil or a case of more may be better...

BamBam,

I gotta' say, in her application, I'd just go with the cheapest oil that meets warranty specs, changed out at the intervals specced for "severe service" in the manual.
I would really worry about oil contamination with that short of a drive.
We've seen other vehicles (usually mini-vans) that get the duty cycles your daughter's car will be getting. I saw one of them that had put a pretty substantial hurting on its oil in only 3,000 miles.

The engines on these cars are from the Lanos. Designated A16DMS. It is crippled because it uses the same intake manifold as my 1.4L DOHC F14D3 engine.

A nice 30wt oil will do. A user posted a UOA using M1 5W30. Looks good.

Sounds like you might not make it to 2 or 3k miles in a year. That's tough on an engine. You might want to forget the mileage and change the oil and filter every 6 months. The best part of doing it this way is that it's harder to forget. If you get busy with life and forget three or four oil changes in a row you'll find out what kind of cookies you mechanic likes for Christmas.

Synthetic is better in every way except the cost of the oil itself. Synthetic or dyno, look around the forum and make a choice. At least there is no wrong answer.

Check the owners manual to see if there is a calendar time frame for oil changes in addition to mileage , since she may hit the time limit before the mileage. That way she is in full warranty compliance. If not, I'm with Larry on a 3K or 6 month interval, whichever comes first. Havoline or Chevron dino would be my choice. Not sure about the Maxlife question.

The owner's manual has a specification for oil, but mentions nothing of the filter. Autozone defaults to a Fram PH3387A

Can anyone tell me what size filter I'm looking for, and would a service manual for the Lanos be close enough to help me out?

Can't help you with the filter info, but if you're really serious about doing work on the vehicle yourself, spend the $135 and get the correct factory manual. You'll more than make up the cost in one brake job. Seriously.

I just picked an Aveo as a daily driver about a month ago. A NEW leftover 04... I'm VERY impressed with the strides that have been made in the economy car arena! I was told that the engine is GM, and the tranny is a GM hydramatic...the smoothness and rensposiveness of the two made the sale for me!

I've not decided what oil/filter combo to go with either as I've only about 1200mi on the clock thus far.

I'll be watching this thread...

Well she has new car itis and has been doing a little cruising and she'll be at 1k this weekend and the factory fill is coming out and most likely it will get Havoline 5w30 synthetic(2 bucks at AZ)for 2k and then I will change again to ??????? Is it woth a uoa on the factory fill? Can I safely assume mobil 5w30 as factory fill?

I didn't know that the Aveo drive train was GM, I knew that the Aveo was made by Daewoo (Korean?) so I assumed that the drive train was also Korean. Anybody have any hard info on this? thanks

The Aveo is actually a Daewoo. GM bought the troubled Korean manufacturer and viola! they got themselves cars to compete in the compact and subcompact market.

The engine is GME in origin because Opel/Vauxhall had a hand in its development. The engine's code and name is as mentioned above. The gearbox if it is automatic transmission is an Aisin-Borg-Warner. Manual transmission versions are using a GME 5speed, forgot the designation.

Thanks to all for replying.

I am planning on using Havolene/Chevron supreme dino with a K&N HP1001 filter. I don't think I should have much problem replacing the oil and filter without the service manual.

I am also wondering if a UOA is worthwhile on the original lube. I'll keep some of the change just in case. I called the stealership yesterday and they had no answers to my questions other than a synthetic was not necessary.

The sticker noted the car was 91% (or possibly 96%, one of those) made in Korea. The engine & transmission are both Daewoo. However, GM bought Daewoo's auto manufacturing, so I guess it depends on your definition of whether the car is a Chevy or Daewoo.

havoline or pennzoil 5w-30 would be an excellent choice. It would help to coat up your engine with moly as it breaks in. Id say to switch to syn between 5-10k

M1 does excellent in my mother's plymouth breeze in a similar situation. 5000 mile/6mo OCIs would be fine.
