Chevy 2500 or Ford F250?

If talk to some of your fellow board member they will say chevy/dodge/ford in terms of least problems. This is fleet maintance of course.

My '87 F250 SuperCab has the last year for the carb'ed 460, an iron C6 and a limited slip diff.. Only 2WD, though.

She'll run on regular, gets around 10 mpg, and will just about pull or carry anything within reason. You can buy an awful lot of gas with the difference in NO MONTHLY PAYMENT and the savings on insurance. Can be serviced (and repaired, when needed) virtually anywhere in the continental US.

Needless to say, good used parts are not a problem.

Cheers!

p.s. The new Chevy HD 1500 with the 6.0 is probably the best riding pickup to be found. Co$t$ a bit more than an 04-06 version, but what a RIDE!

We use a F250 V10 at work to transport mechanics on road trips and around the airport and this puppy gets used and abused everyday. Its only afew years old and has racked up something like 175K. Tranny still shifts fine.

Ok thanks everyone. I have thought about the imports and have gone over it time and time again in my head but I'm sorry I can't buy a Nissan, I do my best to not buy anything that money goes back to France. I would not mind the Tundra but I do not like the interior in the current models and the new ones that are coming out with the 5.7 I'm sure are going to be way too expensive. Thanks again everyone.

The trucks are made in Canton, MS ... just up the road from Jackson where I was born. The lion's share of all that money stays in the states and buying them keeps thousands of Americans working.

That combination never ceased to amaze me. You can bet that if Ford comes up with a good design, they'll cancell it for a cheaper piece of trash every time. Thats one reason the national news announced last night that Toyota will surpass Ford in sales in the US for the first time in history this year. You can give a 10 page dissertation on why this is happening but I can summ it up in one word-QUALITY.

If you're looking at a 2500 from GM you won't be able to get the 8.1. The only engine choice for the 2500 is the 6.0.

If you want to get the 8.1 you either have to get the 2500HD or the 3500.

Either way you can't get the Allsion with the 6.0 its only mated to the 8.1 or D-max. The 4l80-E in the GM trucks is a great tranny (thats what you'd get with the 6.0)

Personally,I'd buy a 2500HD with the 6.0 In my area the 2500 is pretty rare and so is the 8.1,it would be far easier to find a nice used 2500HD/6.0 combo. You don't need the 8.1 for what you want anyways.

Go for the Chevy. I work in highway maintenance. We have all of them Chevy, Ford, and Dodge most with Diesel engines but, about 10% are gas. The Chevys and Dodges with the diesel are hardly ever in the shop for repairs. The Fords on the other hand are the problem children, both the 6.0 liter and 7.3 liter versions. When it comes to gas engine ones again, the Fords are the problem ones.

Our trucks are idled alot, driven very hard at other times. Our trucks are REAL work trucks, not the family trailer towers.

In my opinion you should get the Chevy.

In my opinion this is a horrible question. All it comes down to is Ford guy vs. Chevy guy. Some will say Ford is better. Some will say Chevy. Ford guy vs Chevy guy. I hear guys that work in shops say they would never drive a GM cause they are the worst cars. Then another guy in the same shop says the opposite.

But I will still put my vote for the Chevy

I went through a similar decision about 3 months ago. I wanted diesel though, and I ruled out the Ford.

I was between the GM and Dodge. I really liked the Cummins and SFA of the Dodge. But after driving both...the ride, interior (for me) and the Allison made it a no brainer for me. Got a new 2006 2500HD 4wd, CC/SB with Duramax LBZ/Allison 6 speed. Absolutely love the truck.

A different viewpoint.

If you will be keeping the truck for a lengthy period....

As the years go by, as experienced in the used-parts industry ala wrecking /salvage yards, Chevy/GMC tends to be less expensive regarding replacement parts, whether new or used, followed by Ford then Dodge.

Just a general truism but I witnessed this when involved in the parts industry.

Got out of it in the early 90s so things may have changed.

Iv'e been watching pretty close for years as our city buys 10 or 20 a year, every year, and they get abused by the various maint. divisions. With absolutely no bias, Fords last the longest, Dodges have the most problems, G.M. in the middle. The ford v-10 for a while had some head problems, spitting spark plugs, I think ir was corrected in 04,but check it out.

My observations are pretty close to yours, except (as far as I know) the Chevies haven't been troublesome either. We had a Ford F-150 that made it to 230K miles w/o ANY problems. It was totalled but ran well until the end. We had 3 Dodges and they all had automatic transmission problems and one had the rear go out too. When I bought my Dodge, I got the 5 speed manual and open diff, which is a proven drivetrain and I haven't had any problems. Mt 2001 Dodge actually rides quieter and has a more solid feel to it than the brand new CXhevy W/T, although the W/T has a smoother ride (which I like better). If I were to buy a new truck tomorrow I would lean towards the Chevy, followed by Ford, then Dodge. The reason for this is that Dodge uses only a 74% domestic parts content and the others use 90%. BTW I just saw an ad in the Sunday paper (Richmond, VA) for a leftover new 2006 F-250, long bed, regular cab, 2WD truck for under 18K.
