Check your filters before you leave the store with them.

Hey guys, normally I check filters before I leave Walmart, but in this case I guess I just verified that it was the right filter (and not already used) and went home with it. Unfortunately this was several months ago and I no longer have the receipt, but take a look at what I found when I went to change the oil in the Shadow this morning. Niiiiiiiiice! Check your filters thoroughly guys. We're living in a trust but verify world.
Did you just reuse the old gasket from the previous OC? - Will likely be fine. I guess another option would be to buy another filter and use it's gasket and then keep doing this pay it forward scheme.

Or just "Nip it in the Bud" and return this one.

The way people swap old oil for bad and bring back to Walmart trick is why I stopped buying there. I buy my Valvoline EP directly from Valvoline and it arrives sealed up nice with a heavy, thick sealed tape over the entire top of each bottle.

I actually had a Fram synthetic on hand as well, so I just used that. The guys who have been doing work on this car put a Master Pro filter on it whenever they last changed the oil, so I didn't even attempt to use the gasket from that.

Or some shady person swapping the premium oil filters with lower spec filter.
Yep, I've seen the low spec filters sitting on the shelf with the empty box before. The bum didn't even hide his. Fortunately when I buy at WM I get SuperTech.

Side story. Years ago I was in the automotive aisle at WM and I hear some plastic rustling, like someone was trying to open one of those heavily encapsulated plastic items that require heavy duty scissors. I peak into the aisle and it's a teenager with an Exacto knife (probably also stolen) trying to open something, I don't remember what it was but had to have been somewhat expensive to be in such a heavy duty plastic container.

He saw me and took off. I pursed him for a bit then realized I don't work at Walmart lol. It's the principal. WM must lose so much $$$ in the auto aisle.

The evil BITOGer in me would say “buy another one, return this one”…
I call this the ski pole conundrum. In the 80’s people would steal someone else’s ski poles at the lodge, netting some nicer ones. Then, the victim would follow suit, and it would be a chain reaction.

Until you reached a richey rich with integrity, like my buddy. He’d go to the ski shop and buy a new pair.

you won't need a receipt to return that to Walmart...just show them your credit card (if you used that) or they will give you a gift card for the lowest amount they sold that filter for...then get you another with the gasket...

thanks for the reminder to look at your purchase before leaving...I've seen used oil filters, wrong oil filters etc. as well

Bill
Sign of the times. Just last week I got a returned item from Amazon. The seal was broken and retaped.

It was a duffel bag. Since inside the bag was unopened, I kept it. Since it’s a bag. But another item such as a 20v tool or car part, I’d return it…

Not a Walmart problem, a world problem. No matter where you buy stuff, check it.

I work at an auto parts store and no matter how well I inspect returns as well as when selling anything and how many times I coach my team members to inspect returns and sales and ask me if there is any question, stuff still happens.

But, if we do our best to inspect returns, we open every box when selling stuff, and the customer pays attention, the risk of something going wrong is low.

Sure, when selling 16 spark plugs for a Hemi, I don’t open every single one, but I’ll open a random one per box. Checking each one would take too long, especially when busy. But if they come back, you bet I check every single one!

Just left my local Walmart and found a tough guard filter in an Ultra box Should of made a pic but I didn’t. Gotta check the box
Thanks for the thread

Honestly - stories like this have resulted in me avoiding Walmart for just about everything.

I don’t buy oil or filters from Walmart. Ever.
Walmart charging for bags around 5-6 years ago caused me to stop going there unless I have no choice.
Doing away with 24hr stores was another nail in the coffin.

I run equipment for a contractor that has them as a customer for grounds maintenance.
I hate even plowing their parking lots. They are cheap and expect a winter of snow to somehow fit in a few lesser used corners. Most other customers have a big snow storage area or we haul it off.

Always so much trash... like actual trash and the people going there 🤣.
Constantly get stopped with people wanting smokes, lighters, gas money, etc.

I bought 5 or 6 shades of spray paint at Homes Depot trying to match a forklift close as possible.
Went to return the ones I hadn't used and get more of the match and they checked they actually hadn't been used.
Said people try that.
Or return "unused" house paint but it's filled with water or even engine oil!

Id have just kept them, but they were weird shades of green that I very likely wouldn't use, and seemed fair I was just "trading" for the color I did need.

My Walmarts are not undesirable in any way.
I can, however, imagine some are very gross...just like anything else in a country as big as ours.
I feel I must "stand up" for the players in my circle -a perverse jingoism perhaps.

When returning some MerconV, the employee examined the tops, I said, "I just overbought...they've not been opened...I wouldn't do the old-oil trick".
She was friendly and said, "You'd be surprised".
They are completely a reflection of their location. I go to two different ones that are 8 miles apart, you would think you are on a different planet 1 vs the other.

I got hosed at a Walmart last night. Bought a cabin air filter, and the filter in the box was brand new, so good to go. Or so I thought... When I removed the old filter from the car, it was 2x the size of the one in the box. (No, the model number isn't stamped on the filter.) So returned it to the store. Ordered one from Rockauto, where I'm pretty certain no customers played the 'ol switcheroo.

Has to be something with FRAM QC. FE10575 purchased at WalMart. Box was sealed with one of those circular tape seals that can't be tampered with. Assumed all was good. Once in the car I opened it because I'm like a kid with a new toy. Gasket was missing. Returned it right away.

No longer a Fram customer.

Notify First Brands of the OC issue leaving their facility. I’ve brought to their attention an issue before, they shipped me Two Fram Endurance filters to replace my bad filter for my inconvenience.

I’ve never seen an Endurance box sealed, only the Ultra’s which is why I never buy them.

I bought an ST6607 tonight along with a jug of engine oil and a jug of ATF. Oil filter and engine oil were untouched but not the ATF, someone cracked open the cap seal and put a hole in the foil 🤷‍♂️ . It was the last one so I bought it anyways after making sure the oil was not used and the jug was full.

As a side note, I confirmed the ST9972 is still wire backed with what appears to be an upgraded media. (y)

Would it be "safer" to buy them from Walmart ON LINE vs store? Reason I say this....those on the shelf could be tampered with while those shipped on line may come from warehouse stock. Just curious. I order mine from Walmart on line in sufficient Qty to qualify for free shipping. No issues upon inspection.
