Cheap good safe mild engine flush

Don't use a product that was designed for one purpose for another.
If it is an injector cleaner, use it as that.

First question is for further clarification:
Why do you think you need an engine flush?
What type of car?
Mileage?
Driving style.

Marvel Mystery Oil.
lucas FI cleaner is nothing more that lightweight machine oil. great for lubrication, mediocre for cleaning.

When I was introduced to seafoam, I was hooked. Used it as a short engine flush (prior to service) on a neglected pre-owned loan/lease buyback....after about 400 miles, the oil came out extremely dark. So, I changed the oil, and let the car sit overnight (let it, and the new oil cool off), the next morning, I added the recommended dose of 1.5 oz. per quart of oil, at the time, my Subaru took 4.5 quarts in the crankcase, so I measured out about 6-7 oz of seafoam (like half the can), and put that in the crankcase, drove the car as normal, primarily city driving though (no high load, heavy acceleration at the on-ramps......) for a good 3k, and had the oil changed again, that change, it didn't look nearly as dark. It was still dark, but more of a golden/brown rather than a thick "black" to it.....

Didn't feel a third dose was necessary after the 2nd oil change, but I've heard of people doing it that way. Seafoam is safe in the crankcase but only for 2-3k miles MAX. The main benefit I think is the alcohol that loosens up the gunk, gets it suspended in the oil, where it then can pass through the oil filter.

My latest gems though, I've used MMO, with similar success stories...generally, 1 pint in the crankcase when I change the oil, every time, for anything less than 5 quarts. If the car has a 5 qt capacity, swap one qt of MMO for that one quart of oil (so you only add 4 qts of motor oil, 1 qt of MMO).

Good job to all of you and your custom cleaning solutions.

I prefer to use something from a well known company with a history of successful reviews, etc.

A good one that comes to mind if Amsoil's Engine Flush. It says right on the bottle that its safe to use at every oil change, so i know if won't hurt anything in the long run.

I don't like running a cleaner for hundreds or even thousands of miles. I want good quality oil lubricating the engine, not some cleaner chemicals floating around.

A good engine flush cleaner is used in the engine and idled 10-15 mins before an oil change and then its DUMPED outta the engine, not allowed to keep floating around for miles on end.

They want you to use it every oil change so that they can sell more, just like oil companies and oil change places want you to change oil every 3k/3mo to profit their bank accounts.

I could be mistaken but I dont think seafoam has any alcohol in it. says 100% petroleum on the can. Berrymans on the other hand does contain alcohol.

Yes, +1.

While I agree using it after every OCI may be overkill and give Amsoil more money than they need from 1 person on the same app, it probably doesn't hurt. At least not any more than excessive oil changes(never a mile past 3,000 for example) would cause more engine wear.

This is, of course, assuming you use the product(whatever reputable additive for said purpose) correctly and aren't adding it to an engine while the oil should've been changed well before a flush additive was considered for use.

I Feel the oil looked dirty because it was darker than usual. I regularly look in the oil fill hole.

103,000 miles

50% short trips during the week, 90% highway weekends

I did the flush with Lucas and changed oil and filter, Saturday. Afterwards, realized I actually don't know what the active ingredients are so it's a bad idea. Drove at least 50 miles yesterday. No problems yet.

ATF has LESS detergents then conventional motor in this day and age. It also is not formulated to withstand as high a heat as motor oil. The Amsoil flush says it is to enhance oil draining etc. and can be used every oil change if you so desire or not. Diesel fuel in the crankcase and let idle only for a little while. MMO is one of the best mild choices that is proven to work.

Visit the oil additive section. MMO is cheap, easy and works, lots of success stories there. For moderate cleaning add a pint for the last 1000 miles of the OCI. You can also add a pint for the full OCI, or a qt not to exceed 20% of the sump capacity. During the summer some people running a qt step up a grade in viscosity.

OTOH I'd wait till the winter and add a full qt and enjoy easier cold weather cranking and faster oil flow. Although since you're from TX it shouldn't make much of a difference. JMO

The ATF myth got started because some yahoo thinks that since it and MMO are both RED, they are equal.
ATF will thin the oil a bit and that MAY help a bit cleaning wise, but there's no real detergent action there.

MMO has solvents that do really clean.

Cheap solution that typically gets some kind of positive results. +1.

My own experience (and I've used Amsoil Eng eng. flush , Sea Foam, Marvels, Neutra 131 and a couple of others - many of them several times) - none of them will do much (of anything) about varnish - at least not old established varnnish.

The quick flushes (I would inlude Sea Foam (200 mile flush) in this) - won't do much about gummed rings.

Best bet - run Ams. engine flush (for 30 min). Follow with 100 miles of 16 oz. to a quart of either Marvels or Neutra 131 (preference goes to Neutra 131).

Good luck!

oops - just noticed an error in my post above - that should read "1000 miles" (minimum) on Neutra or Marvels.

Agree with Demarpaint - use a qt of Marvels in the Winter - SOP for me in my Sienna.

ATF is a lousy idea.
It has dispersants, but very little or no detergents.

The best and cheapest flush is simply to change your oil and filter! This is your best bet.
If there are minor problems, then I'd use MMO for 500-1,000 miles.

My boss was using trans oil as a cleaner back in 1970 - the trans oil cleaner reputation has nothing to do with color
Trans oil is loaded with detergents, and can take any heat it will come across in a transmission -- yes even still today - and it cleans as good as MMO
