MMO has solvents that do really clean.

My boss was using trans oil as a cleaner back in 1970 - the trans oil cleaner reputation has nothing to do with color
Trans oil is loaded with detergents, and can take any heat it will come across in a transmission -- yes even still today - and it cleans as good as MMO

by trans oil, you are talking about a gear oil correct? I know they are LOADED with AW additives, but I didn't know they had lots of detergents?

No, he was referring to ATF. That myth has been around a long time.
ATF is low in detergents as transmissions don't see combustion by products and they aren't needed in transmission use.
MMO has been around for 75-80 (?) years.
The dispersants in ATF may clean slightly-but not to the degree that MMO will. It also thins the oil as does MMO. that alone MIGHT give the impression of cleaning as it helps the top layer of crud drain off into the pan.

My 2¢

They operate in a high temperature environment - this causes varnish and the detergents remove and minimize varnish deposits

I think you are very confused about many things

Visit the oil additive section. There is a long thread on the use of a product called "KROIL".

From the many posts of users, that have tried the product, there are success stories there to read about their results.

This Kroil seems to really clean up both varnished engines as well as sludged up engines with a couple of applications of 16 ounces in a FULL crankcase.
