changing trans pan gasket

I have not removed pan yet, I was only going to replace strainer since I thought I had to replace pan due to damaged threads. If pan threads are not too messed up and all I need is a new drain plug bolt, I would lean towards not dropping pan. I don't see the harm in what I am proposing, seems like no metal or wosst case is a VERY MINUTE amount of metal gets in pan. Again, I am not re-tapping threads.

That makes sense. Most likely there will be no shavings, bit I am with ccs368 on threading the bolt from inside. Sometimes i'm a bit anal about these things!

Also, I don't think it would hurt to change filter even if you don't have to. My Cad has a new filter at 105k (and previous owner probably changed it at some point around 50k). My Ody does not have a changeable filter and it bothers me...
