changing oil pan gasket on '89 Ford E350 Van

THanks in advance for any tip/advice you may have for me.

I am looking at a '89 Ford E350 Van that has metal roof rack and is setup for work, road trip, trash hauling, etc. The owner indicates that it is leaking oil because the oil pan gasket is bad. Is it easy to drop the pan on this van and replace the gasket. I know my 92 Corolla transmission gasket was extremely easy to replace. But a lot of vehicles require engine to be lifted to drop the pan.

Please advice.

Some pull the upper plenum on the intake, loosen mounts, and jack the engine up.

That being said, what engine? Single front or rear sump? Double sump?

Most oil pan gaskets on that year are the one piece rubber gaskets which can be worked in place without actually removing tha pan completely. As long as you can work the gasket between the the oil pickup and the oil pan baffle, it falls into place.

I would verify before making a lot of plans, purchasing stuff. Did you try tightening the O.P. bolts.

The car is not mine yet. I saw it on CL and figure it could be a mobile bed on wheels for me when I drive to SC or Miami. It's cheaper to crash in it than to stay in hotel. Motel in the middle of no-where is out of the question after I saw Vancancy.

Most of these ford trucks are pretty hard. I would put the money in a unibody minivan, you can put curtains up on the side windows and still fit an inflatible bed if you dump the 2nd and 3rd row seats.

Be aware that the pan can be rusted, and leak at other places than the gasket - this is rather common.
