Changing from Fram ultra xg7317 to a Fram fps7317

I have been running Fram xg7317 and I've found them to be over kill for my 7500 mile oci but I love how good they are. The price I've been paying is low $7-$8 per filter and I'm looking to buy a 12 pack of fps7317 professional series ultra for $5.75 each shipped.

Everyone says the fps is a ultra without the grip. And ultras are pretty much the best filter on the market.

Once my warranty is over with I plan to do 10k oci

I dunno about Ultra's being the best on the market... I'd reserve that for WIX and Donaldson

I use the FPS filters. They are identical except these don't have the grip. Pretty much unbeatable. IMO

I wouldn't buy a pack of 12 unless you're doing 3-4 oil changes a year. The rubber O rings on them could dry over time, not worth $1 in savings per filter not to mention the extra filters sitting around taking up space.

The FPS is their "Pro" filter made for the oil change places. I like the clean can without the grip paint.

wix is made by purolater so their quality may not be so great anymore

Haha ! Are you high? Wix is mediocre at best. Donaldson can make good quality stuff.

Wix does make great filters, fram ultras are just better, and these fps7317s are cheaper than the wix, use synthetic material, filter smaller particals.

I run about 1200-1400 miles a week.

My oci is about every month and a half to 2 months. About 6-8 oil changes a year currently till I reach 100k, then I'll be 5-6 oc per year

I regret buying a lot of filters to save a couple bucks. I ended up wasting money. It depends how fast they are used. If they will be all used in three years and they start two years old, that would be my limit, five year old filters. Depends on personal preference/ideas I guess.

I do too. The grip doesn't do me any good because I can't get my hand around the filter anyway. The oil pan surrounds the filter a full 180. I gotta use a cup wrench.

I got an oil filter cutter to open a lot of new oil filters in the last few years.
Several filters have "good build quality or appearance" when you open them up, but may not make much of an improvement on oil life and oil appearance since the filter media is harder to assess at the user end.

Bottom dollar FRAMs work well when I stick 2 FilterMags on them as well as extra bar magnets on the space between the FilterMags, cutting wear metals in the oil by half, yet when you open them up the economy FRAMs look like junk compared to FRAM Ultra and most WIX filters.

A pal of mine found the PDF below with the idea of using Donaldson hydraulic oil filters that interchange with automotive filters. Not all cross over but many bigger filters for US makes do, (US threads, not metric).

His oil is only just started turning dark amber after 6 months and 6,000 miles. I think I'm gonna give it a try on my next OCI.

The rationale seems to be that expensive capitol-equipment makers want/demand filters that don't bugger-up expensive machines and cause downtime industrial customers won't tolerate.

Holy [censored] 1300 miles a week in a mirage?? I suggest looking for a job closer to home or moving closer to work......

Since you're probably doing mostly highway mileage, you should try to get a 12pack of Wix filters instead if the savings are worth it. The engine won't know the difference especially since it's a new car with no sludge. Also switch to a 0w20 or 5w20 synthetic blend for more savings, they can easily handle 7500 highway miles especially in a lightweight engine.
