My brother just traded his 2004 F150 for a 2010, both with the 5.4l 3 valve engine.

Although the 2010 only has a 10 HP bump over the 2004, everything underhood is configured and looks different, even the sound of the engine. The valve covers, the intake, plumbing, battery location, etc.

Anybody can help enumerate the running changes made to this motor since 2004? Why so much apparent for so little gain?

I don't know all of the details, but some. Intake is obviously different. For the 2008 model year, revised plugs were used(ones that didn't break). I also believe the problematic cam phasers were revised.

There may have been other changes, not positive though.

Don't know how accurate this is but......

World record with 4.7 litre

The Koenigsegg CCR used a modified, Rotrex supercharged Ford Modular 4-valve DOHC 4.7L V8, which produced 806 hp (601 kW), to achieve a top speed of 241 mph (388 km/h). This certified top speed was recorded on February 28, 2005 in Nardo, Italy and broke the McLaren F1's world record for fastest production car.[34] The accomplishment was recognized by Guinness World Records in 2005, who gave the Koenigsegg CCR the official title of World's Fastest Production Car. The Koenigsegg record was broken several months later by the Bugatti Veyron. This engine is the basis for Koenigsegg's twin-supercharged flexible fuel V8 seen in the CCX.

It's accurate.

Are these engines capable of more HP than the comparable small block Chevy engines for Hot Rodding?

Yep, though some Chevy guys will deny it.

2500+ HP race 4.6 4V: http://www.livernoismotorsports.com/tab.phtml?gk=490&t=Racing - this car is half a second and 25 mph faster in the 1/4 mile than any LSx powered vehicle on the planet, regardless of displacement or power adder(s).
