...and my friends are giving me a complex about the bypass valve opening and letting the crud into the engine. I've done my research on here and feel comfortable that I'm fine. Here's the skinny..
2004 2500HD with 122K. Semi syn kendall 5w30. oil coming out had 5000 miles on it. put fresh kendall in and planned to run 5k and then change everything. filter is a toughguard which is rated for 10k i believe. Just felt like trying the "every other" thing for a while. engine is reasonably clean and oil coming out always looks good. Should I not think twice about this??

In a properly maintained engine, i wouldnt sweat it.
If it was a neglected engine then i'd go with the "Filters are cheap, engines are not" motto. Hahahahaha

Yep some people like me intentionally do this. In fact I'm running a tough guard right now for 2x5k oci which will end up being 10k ish on the filter.

You should be fine. If you're really worried about it, move up to the Fram Ultra filter which is rated for 15k, but keep your 10k mile interval. But again, you should be fine with your current plans.

.... time for some new BITOG Friends! You're perfectly fine running the oil filter for 2 OCI.

So you re use dish water to save money too?

You want your oil to stay clean as long as possible, and changing out the oil and putting in nice, fresh, clean new oil and then running it thru a filter that's got thousands of miles on it not only lets some of that crud into the previously nice, clean oil, but also, is less effective down the road than a new one.

A new filter is $5? $10 tops? Put a new one on each time. it might be "OK" to re use a filter x2 OCI's, but really, it's not better than new. And for those of us who believe "Fine" isn't good enough, it's cheap insurance.

Over 200K on our RX330 with filter changes every other oil change (oil change 5K, oil and filter 10K). Don't sweat it.

It looks like you've been outnumbered here.

Paying a premium for a filter and dumping it at half its useful life is a waste of resources. There is nothing to be gained by replacing a premium filter early.

wasn't trying to save money, just trying to use and trust what i've learned on BITOG from all the knowledgeable people. Plus, it's deer season and i was trying to save myself the time and effort of crawling on the cold stone driveway to wrestle with the filter when i could be out in the timber! ha

I like to put on clean bloomers after I take a bath, and when I change oil, I change the filter too. When I can buy filters for $3.00 a pop it's not a problem.

OMG are you kidding me? Get out to the garage, drain that oil, change the filter, then run for a 5 mile flush, then come back, drain it again and change BOTH the oil and filter again....I cannot fathom what you just did....lol

how exactly does "some of that crud" from the old oil get thru after having changed said oil? If it was in the filter before, it's going to stay there with the new oil too....lol

Well I would think using one $9 dollar filter every other OCI would be preferable to using two [censored] $3.00 filters every OCI any day.

On my daily driver at most 2-3 oz of oil drains from above the oil filter via the oil galleries. It's really not much of a "dry" start when the filter holds about 8-12 oz. and you pre-fill it with fresh oil. And if you do your oil change within 15-60 min of your warmed up car being turned off, there's enough oil clinging to engine parts. No matter what, the pump suction line to the oil pan always has to reprime (ie a partial "dry" start). On anything but the best synthetic filters I would think the 5K-10K mileage period is prime time for tears to occur on paper filters.
