I now understand when people say that Mobil 1 made their engines noisier! I just changed my M1 EP 5w30 to Redline 5w20 with vsot(yep overkill)and the first thing i immediately noticed was my engine was much quieter. When threads popped up about how M1 made their engines louder, I really didnt pay that much attention but today i experienced it myself. I mean my car was quiet with M1 but since it was my first time running it my car at 4500 miles, i had nothing to compare it to but now that i have changed to redline, I can definately say thats its quieter! We'll see if RonAKA's theory(where has he been?)of higher HTHS results in lower gas mileage theory is true or not. I got 23.5 mpg so we'll see. Will be posting the UOA of M1 as soon as its emailed to me.

My autos seem to be quieter with PP than M1. So guess what's going on my shelf. 1 jug of M1 left then it's bye-bye.

correct, i actually drove the car without VSOT in it and then added it at a later time. This morning will be a good test to see if the car is sluggish or not. FWIW, i only added 5oz of vsot. Right now i am in a trial and error stage of the car.

Everything is different I guess. I have two vehicles with M1 in them right now, both 0WXX. Silent as can be.

My cold start knock in my Suburban is definitely louder with M1. I just put Amsoil ASL in it, and seems to be not as loud. The most quiet is with Havoline. There has been much debate here about M1's viscosity and it not absorbing sound or whatever.

Every car I used Mobil 1 on and switched to a different brand like Amsoil or GTX it was much quieter. M1 has some issues they really need to address.

Same here, in my 4Runner (1GR-FE) with the factory fill I could hear a very faint ticking when driving, with M1 I can hear it over the radio sometimes! Im switching back to Syntec when the M1 is done.

Just changed out the M1 5W30 in my Tacoma (4cyl) after 1800+/- miles. It had a 5-10 second hard knocking sound when first cranked cold in AM past few weeks. Had been running 5W or 10W30 Havoline or Castrol with no problems and went to M1 (on sale) on last change. Used M1 in truck some time back and never got this sound. Formula change mentioned in posts? Wont use it again.

If you want to hear a real change in engine, go from M1 to GC! The silence is deafening!!!!

now thats an idea! maybe next oil change....this morning the temp gauge moved to operating temp. much quicker with redline/vsot than it did with mobil 1. The only difference is the viscosity, redline is 5w20 and M1 was 5w30EP but i added 5 ounces of vsot to redline so the viscosity wouldnt really matter.

I've never had noise issues with M1 in any vehicle. Could be nothing significant or it could be the lower quality of the oil as some are suggesting.

You know, after reading a lot on this forum since i joined, i seem to see a pattern with oils high in moly seem to be quieter. Maybe because moly is a friction modifier?

I've used M1 in a variety of engines over the years and never really noticed any difference in noise. I did have some start-up noise in my last Civic, but I attributed that to 200K+ of wear. Could it be that many are hearing noise with M1 based upon their being told that M1 is noisier?

Why people would want to corrupt that beautiful RedLine chemistry with that VSOT pigswill is beyond me.

My thoughts too when I saw it. Doesn't it have enough MOLY???

I agree with you guys but i intend to do uoa's for every oil change and i am just a little curious as how different additives affect uoa's. For example i am thinking about running GC 0w30 with SX-up for my next interval and do a uoa and so forth. This is kinda my beater car. I have 12 other beautiful cars to play with.

The funny thing is, I wasnt even thinking about the noise issue until i drove off and i had to actually had to lower my radio volume by 1 and thats when i started to wonder if it was the M1......but now if i didnt know about this forum and all those threads about m1 being noisy, i probably wouldnt have put 2 and 2 together and think m1 was noisy.
