CD-2 stop leak additive

my vw engine started to leak after switching to synthetic. I have lost 0.5L over 2600 KM. At this rate I have to add 2L during the life of the oil.

I did a search on the net and I saw many good reviews on CD-2 stop leak additive.

Is there any harm in using this product? The package says it takes 1000 KM for it to work. It does not say if I have to drain the oil after 1000 mark. Is there any harm in leaving it in for next 8000 km?

As I just said in regards to another "additive", don't do it if you care about your ride.

What kind of vehicle do you drive?
How many miles on it?
What kind of oil are you currently using?

Anything that says stop leak, will never get near my car's oil. It could work on of two ways.

It could swell the seals, which will only help if your leak is a seal leak. Seal swellers have also been known to make seals hard over time, and the effect can if fact make the leak worse, when fresh oil is added.

Or could actually plug leaks. This is even worse. If it can plug a leak, it can plug an oil passage or an oil filter. That would be even more disasterous.

I would find where your leak is coming from. If it's a gasket it may need to be replaced. Give the oil a few more miles to set in. It could have partially cleaned a seal and may take a few more miles to fully clean it.

The car is a 1990 Golf 1.8 8v. with 260,000KM
I am using AMSOIL 5W40.
I am not 100% sure where the leak is. The entire back side of the motor is full of oil. It was leaking with dino too but not as much.

Yeah, you don't want to use the CD-2, especially since you're using such a high-quality lube.

Why did you jump from mineral oil to a syn. lube on such a high-mileage LEAKING engine though?

I don't know what exactly is available north of the border though, but I think at this point the most ideal course of action would be to use some AutoRx with a top-quality mineral lube.

Stop leaks rarely work and when they do it is usually for a short period. Go back to dino or have the problem repaired. Once seal leaks start they sometimes slow or stop and can go years and many miles before they get worse but eventually the repair is needed. RX sometimes works but after 100,000 miles on an engine seals are just old.

VW engine seals are known to keep intact. I have owned many old VW and non of them had any oil leak other than famous vlave cover gasket.

I switched to synthetic to get better MPG and longer oil change.

losing 0.5 per 3000KM is not too bad. May be I should just leave it alone and chnage the seal next summer when I do the timing belt.

It's hard to determine an where an engine is leaking when the engine is covered with oil and dirt. Give the engine a good cleaning, so you can see the actual origin of the leak.

CD-2 stop leak did not work for me. I had a seal leak with a previous car. I tried CD-2 stop leak and I tried Valvoline MaxLife motor oil which is supposed to have seal conditioners. Neither one stopped the seal leak, although I was impressed with how smooth my engine seemed to run with the Valvoline MaxLife.

The only thing that seemed to stop the seal leak was after I bought some Auto-RX and cleaned the engine. I had been doing 3000 mile oil changes and I did not think the engine would be dirty. And the oil never did seem to get dirty when I used the Auto-RX. But when I changed the oil filter that had been used during the Auto-RX cleaning, oil drained from it slowly like it was somewhat plugged up. The seal leak stopped and did not come back.

I have been sold on Auto-RX ever since. I can't prove that the Auto-RX worked, but I do know that the seal leak stopped after I cleaned the engine with Auto-RX.

Prior to using Auto-RX on my 1996 Ford Contour, there was always a drop of oil everytime I checked:

1)Between the engine and transmission (probably a rear main seal leak)

2)On the end of the oil filter (I have no idea what would have been leaking to make this happen..it wasn't the oil filter itself, but something above the filter)

Since running Auto-RX, I have seen no oil drops at either of these locations. I am now on the final rinse phase.

You know that these are pretty bad leaks when there's ALWAYS a drop of oil there because if it were a smaller leak, oil would never build up to that point--it'd get blown away by the wind before then.
