Caterpillar C18 filter options

Thinking of switching our C18's and 3406's over to the NAPA 1793XE filters because of the efficiency rating and reasonable cost ,trying to extend the intervals out more as well and this seems like a well built filter synthetic wire backed media,but whats got me concerned is the rating of 5 Micron nominal, at first i though it was a bypass filter but upon reading it says its a full flow filter(see bellow)at present were using CAT filters nothing wrong with them they seem well built but getting expensive and trying to find a good suitable replacement.


the NAPA filter flows 28-30 GPM the cat flows 80GPM does anyone see a problem using this filter??? myself i think it will work fine.

Also looking at Fleetguards as an option too but reserching this for now.

We use Fleetguard filters on nearly all the equipment we run on our farm. I especially like their Venturi combo filters that do full-flow and by-pass in one unit. The largest Cat engine we run is a C9 and we've had no issues using a Fleetguard LF9691A. Our local Napa distributor has tried to get us to use their filters but I've found, not just oil filters, but air filters, hydraulic filters, and fuel filters, that Fleetguard is typically better built. We get our filters from a Cummins dealership and their pricing is very competitive and ususally better than Napa. Sometimes, Napa was better if I was buying a whole case of filters that would take me like 10 years to use. On one of our tractors in particular, I was advised not to use the Napa replacement transmission filter over the OEM as the Napa caused too much restriction and would cause the transmission filter light to go off.

Thats whats wix crosses the cat filter too.. I don't see why not. I guess you could maybe call or shoot an email to wix about the flow.

when I cross the cat and wix number on fleetguard website, they show no cross for the wix filter but list a regular, synthetic, and venturi for the cat cross ref.

baldwin also cross the cat and wix a little differently. The cat to the B7229 "high efficiency" and the wix to b99-ss which is the "severe service" version of B7229.

If I had to guess high efficiency is just a better cellulose (like the B299's i use) and maybe the severe service is the synthetic media version?

Either way all the filters have the same OD and length. so I would use them all and not expect any flow problems.

The Venturi combo Fleetguard LF9691A is the one i was researching also for the CATs,I'm presently using a venturi filter on my '01 international ISX Cummings with good results,but cost is more, although i do feel better with the Fleetguard by pass filter on.

Baldwins are good filters also but no local distributor by us so there out of the question,more research i guess thanks guys for the feed back.

yeah the fleetguards can be pricey... from a price perspective I would probably go with the Wix.

Right, but i was thinking of using the fleetguard with John Deere Plus-50II 15w40 and taking it out to 500 hrs sampling once along the way. If JD can recomend 500 for there filter and oil a FG Venturi should be able to do it also, and more.

You can also source your Fleetguard filters through Deere, they have some sort of an affiliation. I'm not sure if Deere owns part of Fleetguard or not but I have always been able to get whatever Fleetguard filter I wanted at my Deere dealer.

Right JD handles them also,so for me i have two outlets that i can get FG through locally hopefully one will be cheaper,going to price around Monday.

You won't find a better filter then the CAT 1R-1808, its a synthetic element, uses a composite inner tube. Thickest filter base and wall in the business. Made by Donaldson to CAT specifications entirely.

Baldwin oil filters are a basic paper filter, metal end caps. I have cut aways of all filters if you would like pics.

Fleetguard is 'Cummins Filtration Division' ; by using the name Fleetguard lets them produce a full line of filters, kind of like Delco or motorcraft.

My preference is the Cat branded Cat/Donaldson partnership filters. If you contact your Cat PSSR they can get competetive with the pricing.

I do mostly use Baldwin filters in the current fleet.

I do not think it's a synthetic media,in the link bellow is a thread i started a few years ago about the factory installed filters when i did the first service on this unit as you can see it's a well built filter for sure but not synthetic,i like these filters but getting them is just to hard for us,we would need to order them online no one around here handles them.

If I get Cat filters, directly through Michigan Cat, they cost more than the Fleetguard equivalents that I get directly through Cummins. We get our filters through Cummins Bridgeway in Grand Rapids and we used to get a deal on filters because we get all our filters through them. I've seen a flyer on their parts desk that they apply that pricing to all customers now though. They have a parts truck that goes around and delivers parts/filters once a week. We're 100 miles away and you're about twice that I think so I don't know what their range is.
