Oil filters(can thickness)Measurements W/Pics..

Ok i finally got around to measuring some of these filters i was limited to brands i had on hand i though i had more but must have tossed them out at one point,anyway each filter can surface area was wiped off clean inside and out to eliminate any debris and then measured multiple times in different spots and the pics show the results.

Filters checked are as follow,in no particulate order..


FRAM Orange can
AC Delco(WIX versiion)
AC Delco UPF
Mobil 1
NAPA Gold
Fleetguard(StrataPore)
Purolator P1(old version Blue)
Purolator P1(new version Yellow)
NAPA ProSelect
Advanced Auto Total Grip



First up the AC Delco UPF

AAP TotalGrip

NAPA ProSelect

Purolator P1(old version Blue)

Fleetguard(StrataPore)

FRAM orange can

NAPA Gold

Mobil 1

AC Delco(WIX version)

So as it stands with these brand filters from thickest to thinnest is

I'm sure that the grip coating on the Pure One adds to the tickness. They don't really seem to have a very thick can, you can squeeze it pretty easily.

The thickest can I've seen is the Amsoil EAO and the Microgreen filters.

Yes, I'd be interested in seeing what the PureOne was without the paint. But of course, all these were measured with paint on them, so they will all be a a few thousands less w/o paint.

Good point i thought that also as i took measurements,i may re-do the AAP TG and P1 after i gently scrap off the coating as i think too that's throwing off accuracy because the can it's self does not seem as thick as others that tested better.

Interested in an Amsoil filter as well.

For some reason before having seen the results, i though the Mobil 1 filter would win, considering they advertise greater strength vs the leading brand.

I tell ya it is a sturdy can the Mobil 1, felt in your hand and with squeezing pressure it is strong,but that FG is a tank!

Not a good measurement in my opinion, and this is not to slam your wok at all. the paint itself can vary between brands enough to throw your measurements off.. Also the alloy may be different between brands. For all we know they could all use a standard sheet roll of metal, then when the can is formed they may vary between different filter sizes etc etc.. Please don't take this as a slam, just several anomalies that may be present when trying to show a variation in measurement in this case..

I will say I like your caliper brand, at one time Japan made tools were scoffed at, now Mitutoyo is my preferred choice especially in digital calipers...

Those TotalGrip's coating are REALLY laid on thick-like a sheet of sandpaper! Wonder what a good way to get that paint off the TotalGrip & P1s would be & what difference would it make?

the only filter i know of which broke open was the one on my friends mustang, lucky it was still under warantee and he got a new engine, also helped probably was his uncle was the service manager at the ford dealer. dont know what the ford filter is

Nice work, though unless the filter is in a significantly compromised position and/or off road use, in a pc application likely make little difference.

As for the AAP TG and P1's with texture, just take a Classic, and you would get the can thickness without the texture. Some paint but no grit.

Nice job & excellent pics with some good info.

But in the long run....it matters little to almost all on-road drivers. The chances of an oil filter being punctured in everyday use is minuscule....several million to one.

I would like to see K&N in this test too. I hear their cans are pretty darn thick as are the Royal Purple Cans. But to me, unless you have an exsposed Oil Filter to where rocks or stones could hit it, the thickness is kinda irrelevant. I mean, it shows build construction and toughness to some degree.

I would like to see the filter material in each, circulation holes and drain back seals.

Very interested though
