what would be best to use? Castrol Syntec Blend or Motorcraft/TropArtic??

just curious what your opinions are...

i used Castrol syn blend in the wifes car for a while, but have switched to MC/TA for the past 3-4 oil changes or so...

Castrol syn- 3.78
TropArtic- 1.48

thats a big reason why. plus i hear MC/TA's add packs are better or somethin. any truth to this?

thanks

First of all, If your paying $3.78 for $2 a quart oil ouch!

I've bought tons of Castrol Syntec blend for $1.49 a quart and it's excellent oil. I've used and am using it here and there in my Toyota with excellent UOAs and driving results.

As long as your changing the oil often enough, I'd go with the tropArtic since it's WAY cheaper and will protect just as well.

Most oils are good.

I go with 4-5k OCIs and by whats on sale. My stash has only on sale oil..

Most of it at 49 cents a quart.

AndyH, ALL of ConocoPhillips "entry level" motor oils in 5W-20, 5w30, and 10w30 viscosities have been Group III synthetic blends for over a year. (~50% Group III) They include:

Phillips 66 TropArtic
Conoco Super All Season
76 Super
Kendall GT-1 High Performance

The only thing "wrong" with these motor oils is that they're sparsely stocked in some locales, though I believe WalMart's been pretty consistent in stocking the T/A for the past year.

Ray, thanks...that is what I thought. As far as T/A being available at Wal-Mart, it must be a regional thing as I've never seen Trop-Artic at my local Wal-Mart (they do stock the Motorcraft though).

Both are very good oils, but I would buy the TropArtic cause its lower priced and is excellent quality.

You might still be able to find T/A Syn Blend at Dollar General for a buck. The DG in my area still had about 20 quarts.

Around here, there's only a 90 cent price difference between Trop Artic ($1.49) and Castrol Syn-Blend ($2.39).

Why are you price-comparing Trop Artic to Castrol Synthetic?

That's an unfair comparison.

At least, according to your post above you are. This below in bold was copied from your original post above.

Castrol syn- 3.78

(Syn) means synthetic ... not syn-blend -- which Trop Artic is.

i meant syn blend. i was just telling u why i switched. the price got ridiculous. i think castrol may be down to 3.44 now, but whatever. anyways i was just asking which was a better oil. not better priced. i already know that, thats why i switched originally. thanks

When i use castrol i make my own blend by adding 2 quarts of synthic to the 4 quarts of dino for my 6 quart pan on the 4.6.Ford.

3.5 quarts? Is that what the owners manual says, or is the oil level on the dip stick at the full mark with 3.5qts? The reason why I ask is: the owner's manual for my car states a 4.5qt capacity; although, it requires 5qts to reach the full mark on the dip stick.

Miami-Dade: Have you ever done a UOA on your blend? I'll be doing the same thing next OC (four GTX plus one Syntec, all in 5w30). I'll be doing a UOA on mine but my palms would be a little less sweaty if I saw one now. Might be apples/oranges (Ford/Honda) but still...
