Castrol vs Valvoline

BP is trying to sell Castrol so who knows what will become of that brand.

GTX Full Syn seems like a pointless product right now, considering on the shelf at Walmart it is currently only one cent cheaper than black bottle Edge per jug. Edge is the higher tier product so why not choose that?
The GTX full syn has a higher vis at 100c than the Edge products. That is what I am after. I will probably only go 5000 or 6 months oci also.

The GTX synthetic is a little thicker than their Edge oils. That is what I am looking for in a 0w-20 weight.

People should also remember that typical values from a PDS are just that, typical. They may or may not reflect any particular lot nor what is on the shelf. Trying to fine-tune a grade by selecting one that is a little thicker is not guaranteed. The only way to get a guaranteed thicker oil is to move up a grade.

Some blenders don't even report "typical" values but are grade or license limits instead.

Well, I just want to try it. I have Schaeffer's 0w-16 in it now. I could use that but it is a pain for me to get from my local distributor. It is a 70-mile round trip to get the Schaeffer oil. The Castrol GTX synthetic 0w-20 I sent in just hit the Polaris lab today. We will see what that says in a few days. Do you know anything about Idemitsu IFG 3 0w-20? I know it is from Japan and manufactured at their plant here in Indiana. Are they just another oil, or is there something special about their oil? Just asking.

Back in the day when at work we had some lubrication engineers come through on a plant tour.I was at the lathe and they asked me what I was doing and I explained my process. This was when conventional was a lot cheaper than synthetic oil.I asked them in your professional opinion what's the best conventional oil out there and they all agreed on Valvoline. Then one of them gave me a Castrol Lubricants sticker and I put it on the inside lid of my toolbox. LOL! Like the dude on project farm always says there a lot of synthetic oils out there and they all do a good job!

Both are on sale right now. I did a search and found many different threads which seem to not come to any conclusions. So let me know your thoughts on which one you would choose.
Valvoline is owned by the Saudi government through Aramco. Saudi Arabia is a religious dictatorship that does nasty things
Castrol is owned by British Petroleum a shareholder owned company headquartered in a free country

Both are great.

If you’re keeping oil changes to 5k miles, doesn’t make too much of a difference. I’d go with Valvoline.

Castrol always seemed to keep my engines internally clean during the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000's
I was always specifically impressed with that about Castrol.
VRP seems to be the next level for cleaning.

That said, I recently decided to try Delo XSP 15w-40 in one of my 1999 minivans.
Seems to have bumped the oil pressure up a bit when moving, but it seems slightly lower hot at idle (not good).
So post#47 seems to make sense.

Castrol Edge (not GTX) and Valvoline EP are both excellent IMO. The Valvoline is thicker (higher viscosity) if comparing same grade oils.

For example 5w30 Edge is thinner than 5w30 V EP. 10w30 Edge is slightly thicker than 5w30 V EP. I think this trend also trend applies to other grades as well.

You can't got wrong with Edge or Valvoline EP. Choose either. They're among my favorites. When not on sale, Edge costs less than V EP. So I'd choose Edge between those 2. You won't always be able to find these oils on sale.

Another excellent choice that costs the least is Quaker State Ultimate Protection Full Synthetic at Walmart. I personally think it's (arguably) the best of the 3. I intend to use this oil in future.

My other favorite is Shell Rotella Multi Vehicle.

QSUPFS & Rotella are thicker per grade than the others mentioned.

My question was which product family would you choose if it came down to Castrol or Valvoline?

I noticed Castrol has a good following here with many stating it has a high quality base stock. As for Valvoline I only see posts about R&P. Not too many on their other oils.
I don't like the Castrol GTX family.
I like the Castrol Edge family.
I like the Valvoline family in general, but especially their Maxlife & EP familiies.
I like the Quaker State family.
I like the Shell Rotella Multi Vehicle family.

That said, all of this thread is splitting irrelevant hairs for a 5K or 7.5K OCI. Probably even a 10K OCI. Any brand of certified oil is more than good enough for 5K to 7.5K OCI.

Both oils OP asked about are excellent for 10K.

If you want to discuss 15K or 20K OCI, then don't use V EP. Castrol Edge claims to be good for 20K. It might really be good for 20K. I don't know. I'm confident Edge is more than good enough for 15K OCI (with a good ext OCI filter, such as NAPA Gold). Likewise with QSUPFS & Rotella MV.

Even for severe duty, 10K OCI would be no problem for Edge, QSUPFS, or Rotella MV.
