Castrol Syntec?

My local small auto parts store has Castrol Syntec on sale and I like to help out the small guy.

I have never used Castrol Syntec I think it's the only synthetic I have not used yet and I was wondering is it on par with the rest of the worlds synthetic oils? Also is one grade 10/30 or 5w30 better for high temps and towing or will this not matter as long as I stay with the 30wt?

At my brothers Caddy dealership they use Castrol "Syntec" instead of the usual factory specified Mobil 1. Since all GM dealers can now service each others car/trucks I'l be taking my Impala SS there from now on. My old dealer now sells Infinity along with Buick/Chevrolet and I can't understand how GM could allow a single dealership to do this??? Regardless my car gets serviced by an all GM dealership and not this 50/50 deal. From what I've been told on this forum "Syntec" is a fine synthetic and that makes me feel confident.

Ahh, Castrol! the British Oil that started the whole fake synthetic bamboozal. Edge with Syntec or former Syntec never met GM corvette spec, and I dont think it is DEXOS 1 approved/licensed. I would use a good conventional over this oil.

My Dodge Caravan went about 230,000 miles on Syntec before the transmission exploded. Don't overthink this stuff. There are no bad oils.
 
Use the weight specified for the vehicle. Use a over the counter synthetic of your choice. I'm not fond of Castrol cause of the word 'synthetic' that I feel they sued to use in the wrong context.

Syntec has never had much love here, other than GC.
I've used it in the past and I'm using it now in one car.
The few used oil analysis of Syntec 5w30 posted here have been quite good.
Ignore the haters and use Syntec with confidence.
There appear to be organic additives in many oils that VOAs don't detect.
How else would you explain the excellent performance of oils in used oil analysis that have a very light metallic additive package?
It may be that BP knows more about formulating an oil than do most of us here.
 
Would there be i difference between gtx and syntec in say 5-8000 km in a every day vehicle?

Does syntec even have more or stronger ingredients than gtx? Not many voa or uoa reports.

GTX is a dino product and the Syntec is synthetic. That should tell it all.

What are you currently using?
 
Castrol make great oil.
If I am not mistaken it is VW, BMW and Benz factory fill.

Syntec is primarily a Grp III oil, while GTX is presumably mostly Grp II.
Both oils have shown good used oil analysis in that forum, as do most oils in most applications.
Bad used oil analysis are the exception for any oil.
In 5-8K km, I doubt that there'd be any difference, unless you have a very demanding application or very severe service.
Fuel economy might be a little better with the Syntec, but only because it's thinner than the GTX.
This alone might be enough to cover the additional cost of the Syntec.

It is Dexos1 in the 5w-20 and 5w30 flavors and Dexos1 is only required for 2011 and newer cars.

FWIW, I'll add my name to those who have used Castrol oils, including GTX, Edge, etc., under all sorts of conditions, and I wouldn't hestitate to recommend them to a friend. Moreover, if I were going to give up on an oil company because at some point in the past they made too much money, ran stupid ads, drilled in Iran, fired some racer I admired, employed some dope that drove one of their tankers aground, spilled oil on someone's beach, cut their dividend, etc., I wouldn't have a lot of good choices left.

Is Castrol a new licensee? It's not on GM's website.

GM dexos Licensed Products

I don't doubt that it meets dexos1 performance requirements, as claimed in the PDS, or that it would work well in a dexos1 application, but that's not the same thing as being dexos1 licensed and approved by GM.

As you point out, it's not an issue for GM cars before 2011.
