Castrol Syntec 5w50 overkill for my application?

I was very happy with the personalized response I got from the company president. If only other companies replied like this.

Hi Dan,

Our oils are well suited for automotive use from a lubrication standpoint. However, the high levels of additive introduced in our high performance oils can cause some interference with how a catalytic converter functions. There are studies going on to better understand the reaction between phosphorous (an excellent anti-wear/anti-scuff additive) and the precious metals found in a vehicles emissions systems.

Having said this, I have run Ultra 5w40 in my wife's Lexus SUV from early on without issue or complications with the emission system. I also run 530RR in my BMW without issue. I can speak firsthand about the oil in automotive use and enjoy the level of confidence the oil gives me. I change oil at 6000-7000 miles. I do want to make you aware of the potential issues with the emission system though. Normal auto oils will have 1/3 the anti-wear and extreme pressure additives.

Sincerely,

Danny Massie
