I tried doing a search on here re: this, but the search here has a lot to be desired.Anyway, what do you guy`s think of the Castrol Syntec 5W-30? I know it`s not the German stuff, but is it any good? anyone have any wear #`s on it?

Thanx,
Ryan

Personally, I think it is a very, very good oil that get 'shortchanged' on here A LOT. I wouldn't hesiate to do 10-12k miles with it at all.

The only wear numbers I have on Castrol Syntec are the 225,000 miles I put on a Dodge Caravan with the 3.3 liter v-6, mostly with Syntec in the crankcase. It is still running great.

Sounds good,But then again, those are bullet proof motor`s to begin with. Did you ever happen to pull a valve cover off? if so,how did it look?

When i had my Honda Civic before the Tacoma thats all i ran for most of its life....ive thought about switching back.

I have used this oil in the past as well, then got away from it also.I might try it again, worked well for me before.

It IS interesting that few on bitog use the Syntec products (except GC).
A quick look at the UOA section reveals very few analysis on Syntec 5w30. It can't be that bad - they sell a lot of it and AFAIK there aren't any mass engine losses behind using it.

Maybe we avoid it because of their hokey advertising.

There are also "as good as" oils for less $$$ - or at least we think so. How could we really know without the necessary data from lots of UOA's?

Just thinking out loud...

"A quick look at the UOA section reveals very few analysis on Syntec 5w30"

Going by the analysis you have seen of it,does it look good?

It produces very good results, from what I've seen. Never seen a run past about 8k miles, though.

I'm thinking I should run it 10k miles and see how it does...just to get some more attention back to it, now that there is the 'Edge' oil, and its 15k miles gurantee....

The problem with the Syntec 5W-30 is that it's not a good deal atleast not here in Canada.
At WalMart it's the same price as GC so it's a no-brainer to opt for GC, GC being a true synthetic and the 5W-30 is only a group III based oil. Furthermore if you want a light 30 grade oil, PP is cheaper. Unless it's on sale for 50% off (and GC isn't) why would one buy it?

There are a fair amount of sales on Syntec in Canada - you just have to look for them (WM and CT are often offering jugs for a good price, and there's a sale on at Partssource right now!)

Even if it is Group III, Syntec 5W-30 is an excellent oil. Why would you choose it over GC? GC is an 'old school', heavy 30-weight, non friction modified Euro-oil. ot good for all apps.

Syntec 5W-30 is not that light with a 100C vis of 11 cSt when fresh. If you're in the market for a light 30 grade PP is certainly lighter and cheaper ( $21 for a 4.4 l jug recently at WM ). If syntec dropped down to that price level it would be worth considering, but then I'd likely opt for there 5W-20 instead.

As far as GC being 'old school'. IMO it's still one of the best formulation out there and again IMO out performs M1 0W-40.
Problem is rarely goes on sale anymore since it only comes in liter bottles.

SM Syntec 5W-30 is a VERY this 30-weight, it is 9.7cst @100C! In fact, I think its the thinnest synthetic 30-weight you can buy!

No...get on the companys wedsite and do your soul searching there.

Just asking a question, that is how you learn thing`s right? Any way, thank`s for replying.I have heard of this cst,but I wasn`t sure what it`s all about.

Lexus114, I can't believe you've posted 143 times and don't know what cSt is....bad boy...to the back of the class.
CSt is the abbreviation of centistoke, the unit measure of kinematic viscosity.

Addguy, my fellow cannuck, you're right it is 9.7 cSt, it is the 5W-30 syn blend that's 11.
Actually the syntec 5W-20 vis is virtually the same @ 9.0 cSt. In practise I'd say there's no difference between the oil grades.

Sorry man.....

"the unit measure of kinematic viscosity"

so in a way,I was right. It deals with the viscosity. The actual viscosity,by number. If I am totally wrong with this, enlighten me please.
