Castrol GTX Dino

At my Walmart, GTX is currently $16.47, and GTX Synblend is also $16.47 on rollback. Pennzoil Conventional is also $16.47. Quaker State is $14.47 and Mobil Super 5000 is $12.97. Valvoline is $16.47. Seems to be a theme here.

Anyway, while I would have no qualms running GTX, there are other oils for the same price or less that I like better. I don't know if they are better, but for whatever reason, I like them.

I ran the 5w30 GTX in a Tacoma 3.4 for 5k OCI and achieved as good or better UOA results as any I saw posted on this board. I ran GTX in most everything for quite a few years. However I'm switching to Pennzoil conventional now as their virgin stats show the best dino out there.

You mean the gearbox, not the crankcase.

GTX is one of the cheapest major brand Dino's here. And its usually on special. We don't get 5w20 or 30 though. Gtx starts at 10w30.

Ran GTX years ago in a 2.2 Omni bought with 51,000 miles. It uses about 1/2 quart in 3000 miles. Switched to M1 and consumption was nil on 5-6000 mile oci until daughter #1 wrecked car with 198,000 miles on the odo.

My father had a 1987 Hyundai Excel, and he used GTX 20w50 at every oil change. He traded it in at 110,000 miles to buy a 1992 Nissan Sentra. No mechanic at the dealership believed anyone could get that many miles from a Hyundai Excel, so they had to read the odometer for themselves.

My dad used Castrol since the 70s because he owned only small cars during the 70s, 80s, and much of the 90s.

So it may sound crazy to some BITOGers to use Castrol GTX, but it makes perfect sense to me.

I never really cared about the "Trishield" name. It basically means the oil is designed to reduce wear, friction, and sludge, which is what any properly made engine oil is supposed to so.

I don't have much scientific to add. I have put well over 100,000 miles on Castrol GTX on a 1984 Honda Accord, 1987 Porsche 944, 1983 Volvo 240 Turbo, 1991 Geo Prizm, and 1991 Honda Accord. I didn't have any problem with sludge or varnish buildup in any of the motors, however I also used pretty conservative 3-4k drain intervals.

I have had great result with Castrol. Dino Pennzoil Conventional and Castrol GTX are vey comparable. This site overrates the pennzoil product.

I agree that Pennzoil Conventional is over rated, I'll take Quaker State Conventional or Valvoline Conventional any day over Pennzoil Conventional.

Why if the price where equal?

Quaker State Conventional is $2.50 cheaper per 5quart jug, and i would choose Valvoline conventional because i used it for 14yrs and it always works great. Started using Quaker State Conventional 4yrs ago when i got married since i had 2 cars to maintain. Saved a few bucks and the cars actually ran a little quieter and smoother.

Agreed. That's all pretty silly. While I "believe" that Pennzoil Conventional, Quaker State Conventional, and Formula Shell are different products (Johnny even said so), their lab reports are close enough to be within the margin of error. In either case, I'd have an extremely difficult time choosing between any of those three SOPUS products if price and availability were the same.

In fact, that's how my truck had Quaker State Conventional and the G37 had Pennzoil Conventional for the longest time. I was grabbing either product, depending which was on special when I was at the store.

I have used nothing else but GTX10W30 in my 02 3.4 Tacoma since new that now has 221000 miles and runs great. At 195000 miles I changed the valve cover gaskets and motor was as clean as any I've seen here. Also use it in my wifes 06 Vibe since new and now has 198000 miles with same results. Where live Castrol is the same price as all the other name brands.

Yesterday i changed my oil and useing Castrol GTX but i sure hope the Fram Extra Guard oil filter can handle 6,0000 or 6 months.I was planning to cut open my old Extra Guard and see what condition its in when i get the chance..maybe i should of gotten the Tough Guard for this long haul. The Castrol GTX 5W20 conventional should handle my quest but i will see if Fram Extra Guard can as well

You`ll be fine with the Fram. That`s all I used for years. Sincs I`ve owned my Nissan,I usually use the Nissan japanese oem`s.

I think it would be ok too aquariuscsm.I may do a used oil analysis in the end with my 2008 Dakota..and one more for my wifes 2008 Ford Fusion to see the report
