So my Mustang has the 3v 4.6L and I recently changed the oil with Castrol Edge. In one of the currently active threads that discuss the new 0w-20 recommendation for Toyota, I'm seeing Edge is known to have high counts of magnesium. How well does magnesium mix in an aluminum block? Can I trust this oil to go 10k+ even with occasional track use?

10k with track use? Maybe.

Magnesium in an Aluminum block? Magnesium is a detergent/dispersant and isn't going to cause any strange reactions with the block or other metal components.

What is your normal driving pattern? Average daily trip length? What does occasional track use mean?

Your best bet is to take it to 5K and then do a used oil analysis.

Normal driving is shifting at
Occasional track use is a 40 minute session (broken up into 2 20 minute sessions with a 10 minute break in between) at Road Atlanta. I might do this twice a year.
And then 20-30 passes down the 1/4 mile dragstrip.

Forget what you read about magnesium-based detergents in that other thread. 10k miles with track use with any oil in any engine is asking a lot. Either cut that back and don't do used oil analysis or if 10k is a goal, do used oil analysis starting at shorter intervals.

That's what I was thinking. I've never gone longer than 5k on an OCI in this car and I don't think I should. I'll do a used oil analysis to confirm.

Are you planning on drag racing with 0W-20 in there ?

Who said anything about 0w-20 in my car? I only mentioned Castrol Edge. I didn't specify the viscosity but you would have found out if you cared to read my signature.

I wouldn't run it that long. I change mine at 5k but should be pushing it out to 7,500 with normal driving. You on the other hand with the drag racing should be reducing your OCIs. These cars are pretty easy on oil with the big sump.

That's exactly what Ford recommends. I will stick with 4k-5k OCIs then.
