I recently switched my honda to Castrol EDGE 0w20 and after about 600 miles on the oil, its about 1/4 quart low. I topped it off. It certainly does not have any leaks, so it must be burning it. No visible smoke, no burning oil smell. Just wondering why this is so excessive? What course of action to take? My next fill will probably be 5w20 as i am using the 0w20 for the winter.

it did not burn a drop with syntec 5w20.

+1, i doubt this will happen on your 2nd run of it

why is it it burned nothing with syntec but its drinking the edge?

So i guess for topping up so frequently will not give an accurate UOA, correct?

castrol edge has done this on every vehicle i have switched it to. It takes about 2 or 3 oci and it will stop burning.

I wonder why that is?

been reported in other oils, theres a PU vs synpwr thread going on now posting similar consuption results............

interesting. I'm curious as well.

What kind of vehicles?

This is a somewhat common phenomena that happens when switching oils for the first change or two. I don't think anyone knows why for sure. It's just something that sometimes happens.

The vehicles were:

2000 Ford Mustang GT 4.6
1999 4cyl Toyota Camry
2003 Toyota Corolla 4cyl

i've switched to many oils, pennzoil, valvoline, royal purple, supertech, havoline - none of these oils have ever burned any oil. Led me to believe at the time that something about edge was special - good or bad i don't know - but when edge came out, i remember talking about it all the time. That shiny gold bottle...couldn't neglect trying it. I only did 3,000 mile oil changes on it

I guess I've been lucky, I've switched 2 vehicles to it, and both of these vehicles don't use oil, and haven't used any Edge either. I've read the same thing happened to a lot of members who changed to PP, I had no problem with that either.

I would suggest the OP does exactly what you did and stick with it a little longer. Then if he decides to do a used oil analysis to do it after the second or third run with Edge which will give a more accurate report of how Edge is doing.

My Tahoe started drinking Castrol EDGE 5w30 when I switched it from Schaeffers. Last OCI I swithced to Mobil 1 5w30 and it has used no oil in the last 8000 miles. It did seem to run quieter and I noticed a slight improvement on fuel economy on Castrol EDGE, but I wont be using it again.

should i cut the first couple oci shorter due to the consumption?

My 03 Acura MDX V6 has 5W30 Edge and has not consumed any oil... Used too use 5W20 but I have not noticed any MPG loss going to the 30 weight oil. It actually seems to run quieter and smoother with the 30 weight Edge. Maybe try the 5W30 Edge which is a lighter 30 weight oil.

i may try the 5w30, i have not decided yet.

boss302 fan i sent you a PM.

Keep going with the interval toping it off and keep us posted, see how it acts from here on out,how far is the OCI going to be?

i'm debating whether or not i'm going to go the full cycle. i was going to do 7k miles and do a used oil analysis, but it wont be accurate as far as TBN with all the top ups.
