09 impreza burning oil with castrol edge Ti

hi guys i recently swapped oil from german castrol 0w30 to castrol edge 5w30. I noticed that after just 1000km my car has burnt about 1/2 quart of oil. i also constantly smell burning oil under high engine load or after brisk acceleration. this never happened with the GC or valvoline maxlife synthetic blend before that. wondering if maybe edge is just too thin and not really a 5w30 or it's just not for my car. the reason i switched is because my car's manual demands API SM oil, which GC and Valvoline maxlife are not, and edge is.

If you can smell oil burning then it's not going through the exhaust,unless you have an exhaust leak.
Likely dripping in to the exhaust manifold,and under high load/high revs it would get enough pressure and thin a bit from the extra heat and might be finding a small gasket leak that otherwise doesn't leak.

What is the condition of your PCV system? If there is a problem with that, you will get excess oil consumption.
