Found no notice on this site about this oil so I going to post some Info :

Seems like an SLX derivate.

A strong feeling of deja vu: quite possible this is SLX LongTec version for Germany and another equivalent of SLX GM. One stuff fits all needs ? Great !

The label says "topup" so it's got an additive package intended to replenish the oil it's added to, it's not intended for oil changes - there will be another type (three letter code, no doubt) for that purpose

No it's not a simple additive. The SLX is also labeled TOP UP [1] on Castrol's site but you guys on here still buy 9 bottles and do oil changes with it.

I read somewhere that it is the successor to SLX Longtec II.

TOPUP means the quality is equal to first fill and workshop oils. Nothing more.

BTW, now SLX family also includes a special oil for BMW: Formula SLX LL-01 0w30 API SL/CF ACEA A3/B3/B4 Longlife-01.

At around $30 CAD per litre, it had better come with Vaso... oh, never mind, it already is a lube

While I have 2 SBC engines running the Elixor of Long Life, I'm not going to do an oil change for $150 CAD. But it is nice to know that there is a premium oil for those who need the gummi bear smell

I smelt my fresh GC / SLX, and I found that it didn't remind me of those poor little bears

Thanks for the explanation on the "TOPUP" labelling - we don't see that here in Canada, so I reached my conclusion based on the Castrol.de site. It's better to find out from someone who knows.

I noticed the BMW SLX LL01 version a while ago - it's on the Castrol.co.uk site, I think, and I wondered what made it different from regular SLX. With a 2003 M5, I want oil that's got film strength (HTHS) to spare. BMW sells TXT Softec over here in their own bottles for the M5 - its good oil, but is it really enough? I use TWS in the summer, and BMW's TXT in the winter.

I've never found GC to smell like gummibears at all myself.

Castrol Germany says - Due to the ever longer oil change intervals increased refilling need with many vehicles between the service checks (TOPUP) exists. With the 3 products of the TOPUP row Castrol offers the correct refilling oil in particular for the modern engine generation.

This was translated so the grammar is not perfect but it sure seems to say the products are designed for topping off.

With all these new brand name oils launched by Castrol during last 2-3 years it's quite difficult to understand the real difference, moreover that the manufacturer does not like to share with all info. As I could find now Castrol offers 2 types of Formula SLX 0w30 for BMW:

LL-01 FE (HT/HS = 3.0)
LL-01 (HT/HS > 3.5)

As for BMW 5 oil, sorry, but I'm already lost: some years may use any oil having BMW LL or LL-01 approvals, others - 10W-60 only (Castrol, Shell). If your year model is allowed to use TXT Softec 5w30 or 5W-40, then you may use any oil qualified for ACEA A3/B3. Naturally, it would be better if it's also approved by BMW. BMW LL-01 FE is in fact a variation of ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5 and therefore should not be used in BMW 3 and 5 series. Personally I don't know a BMW 3/5 owner who would use 0W-30/40 or 5w30 oil, but no one from my friends has a war car made after 1999. Mostly it's Castrol TWS 10W-60 (Formula RS in the past) including for winter time, but some of them use Mobil 1 5W-50, Motul 300V 15W-50 or 15W-60 in summer and 10W-40 in winter.

You have a wonderful car and in addition it's new. Do you drive in Canadian winter ?!

The Price for Castrol SLX (1L) over here is even higher while being low in the US, so if DCO arrives in the US it might aswell have a similar price tag then the SLX.

BMW in North America recommends their own branded 5w30 for everything here, EXCEPT the early E39 M5's and all of the E46 M3's. Many people speculate that it's Castrol TXT Softec in BMW bottles. It's good oil - ACEA A3 with a good additive package. BMW Canada even uses it in the LL-01FE vehicles (there's a sticker on the engine!) so who knows what it really is.

All North American M5's (early or late) can use either TWS10w-60 or the 5w30 above - user's choice (except when BMW is paying for it - then you get 5w30 at half the cost). I use TWS in the summer and BMW 5w30 or Mobil 1 0w-40 in the winter.

And, I do drive the M5 in the winter - in Vancouver we only get a day or two of snow, so it's not a big deal - not like the east, where there's a lot of snow, and lots of road salt. The snow we get is very slippery, also unlike the east - a gentle touch on the throttle is the only way to keep the car pointed in the right direction. The M5 is very smooth and powerful, so it drives well in our snow, remarkably enough.
