Did my first oil change. Installed this particular oil filter. It’s simply says 3/4 - 1 turn after contact on the tightness. It really kinda stopped at 2/3. I was able to get it to 3/4 but it was pure muscle and hand cramps. I now will stop at 2/3 next time. I guess the rubber gasket are not as thick as they was back in the day. That’s the instructions on the car quest premium ( 3/4-1 ). I just looked at a Nissan filter ( Japan Maun ) filter. It has 2/3 turn on it. Ha !!!! Wardawg.

My experience over the decades is 1/2 to 1 1/4 turn on various vehicle and ag. equipment filters. I, too, have a filter on a farm tractor that takes herculean effort to get past 1/2 turn. Strength between people also varies tremendously, so "hand tight" is somewhat laughable.

You did good. Your problem was reading the instructions. Real men never read instructions.

I use a metal band wrench to tighten them to beyond the 1/2 turn after contact towards 3/4-1 since my hands and wrists can't hand tighten anymore without hurting afterwards.

The CQ 84356 have/use a "captured P type gasket" on it. That being the case, you could possibly hit torque stop on it before 3/4 turn and should not force it further which could cause a leak. 2/3 turn should get it done, then as always check for leaks.

i install until i can no longer turn by hand. i have NEVER had an oil filter leak in the 100’s i have installed.
Likewise, installed many filters only by hand and never had one leak or come loose.

That said there are a couple filters out there known or at least believed to leak if not torqued. The Honda S2000 filter has a double-seam seal gland and the s2000 guys seem to think it needs the spec torque of 12-18lb ft.

Here's the S2K filter on the right:

Heck, maybe we're just strong enough to get 18 lb-ft by hand? (I wish). I always just go as tight as I can get it by hand and call it good. As I get more arthritic, I might need to start using a cap wrench.

Karma comes back to bite us. I used to laugh at all of the tv commercials of gadgets to help old people open/close various containers. Now I have to grunt more to loosen/tighten oil filters, pull the foil cap off some containers etc.

You young whipper snappers listen to us old and wise ones! Your day is coming! ;)
