Car vs horse!

No pics so I will spare every one the gory details! Last night about 6p a horse got away from it's rider. It got hit and killed by a newer Jeep Cherokee. We happened along just a few seconds after it got hit. The horse did not make it.

The Jeep was absolutely destroyed! We don't have deer here to hit so this much damage to a car from an animal was a real eye opener for me.

There is a 2nd horse thats missing still. We looked for it for about an hour with no luck.
 
I hit a deer with my Passat about two years ago just as it was getting dark. I saw the small herd of them in a field to my right about 50 feet from the roadside as I came up a hill doing about 50. All of a sudden, One of them broke from the herd and ran right in front of the car. I saw the motion and hit the brake but still was probably going 35-40 when I hit it with the right front corner. It caused over four thousand in damages. New fender, hood and front light assembly as well as a few inner pieces. Now this was a small deer, relatively speaking. She got up and ran away but I am sure she died later. A horse would probably weigh 6-8 times or more what this doe weighed.

You mean the deer jumped in front of your car.
 
Real sad about the horse. We actually have problems with both deer and elk up here. A deer hit is bad enough but an Elk hit can be life threatening. As above, they arn't just plodding down the road. They suddenly sprint onto the highway and I ‘ve see cases where they actually run into the side of a moving car. It's worse at night when you can't see them well.

According to the horse owner the horse ran off at full gallop and into the street with a 50 speed limit. I almost hit 4 of them a couple weeks ago. Driving down a narrow curvy street in the dark. I came around a blind curve going the 45 speed limit and the 4 horses and riders were in my lane.

Same reason folks cannot see a huge school bus.....how can one not see a big school bus??
 
I've seen deer destroy cars and even kill occupants in the car. Can't imagine the damage a horse would do. I hope no one in the car got hurt.
 
Were surrounded by swarms of them around here. I've got my own personal herd of around 10 that never go far and about yearly I nearly hit in my driveway. I've had one jump over the hood of my car twice in the driveway. They are almost tame. In Northern NY most folks have hit at least one sometime or other with many getting 2 or more. They are a menace. Add to that a few bear and the occasional moose hood ornaments every now and again.
The secret of deer dodging is that it mostly happens at night. When you see one dive on the brakes period. She likely won't move but that one you don't see may.
Then just like rover is the other scenario. 3 run across and take off into the brush, they're not coming back right? Dive on brakes anyway because 1 out of 4 times there's that straggler blindly trying to catch up, or horny buck chasing them, Bang. Either of those are dodgable if you're on your toes.
My favorite is the Kamakazi deer for which there is no known defense. I've been in 2 of those one driving. All you see is a streak like a tracer round from the peripheral ending in a cascade of plastic pieces as the grill disintegrates. You don't even get to think about the brakes and it seems to always end right dead center. Usually gets the grill, hood, radiator, a fender and one headlight. I know a guy who got torpedoed right off his motorcycle by one like that Hit right on the gas tank and he got a nasty beating in the pile up. They are a true menace.

I've hit four deer and all four deer HIT ME. They run right into the side of my car or truck every single time. Not once have I hit one head on. The last one jumped a fence and slammed into the rear corner of my steel flatbed (one ton Ford). Not a scratch but instantly killed the deer.
 
Back a long time ago my father hit a horse. He was driving at about 25 MPH but the horse who had escaped his corral was charging straight at my father. The horse clipped the headlight area, must of taken a bad fall to have broken his neck and died. Minimal damage to the car.

The owner of the horse was notorious for letting his horses get loose and escape.

Deer are fast, neurotic, and stupid...bad combination.

Not much. Friday night my neighbor had a 35 year old horse that was a downer [couldn't get up I offered to put the horse down] but he let it suffer over night until the vet came to put it down. For some reason it is sad to see a horse suffer. Actually any animal.
