I really was hammered by my car insurance this year but added a daughter who is 20. However I also purchased a 2011 Toyota Prius for good mileage to work and fishing trips I take to the ocean. Original quote came in $3,200 a year for 5 cars and 4 drivers liability only. 1 of my daughters will not drive but they say unless she revokes her license state law requires her to be included. Removing her saves us only $130 a year. A few years ago before younger drivers were in the pool I was paying $1,100 for my wife and me. They are pricing me out and thinking I may drop to 3 nicer cars. I would rather spend the money on nicer cars than insurance on beaters. Hoping someone here has some good ideas or ways to save on car insurance. Home is also going up to and they are bundled. I have Erie insurance and keep seeing ads for dropping my insurance prices but when I look into they are usually more and the non stop calls after you search is very annoying

My experience is if there are young drivers that call your home their primary address, you are going to pay a lot more. I found no way to avoid the extra cost. Now that they are all adults living on their own, my insurance rates are way back down.

Always a hot topic in forms. Its hard to say with certainty anything insurance. So many factors between states, areas of risk, credit scores and in your case drivers other than you and your wife.

1. Personally? I never had my name on any of my kids vehicles. Always had to go in their name, liability was a concern if they did something stupid.

2. Im not sure but if you haven't called or checked online at LEAST 3 other car insurers then there is no reason to ask your question except to try to help you. So you need to call other insurers. Doing it online is easier

3. Same goes for your house. Bundling your home with cars normally doesnt work out well. I get it, much the population falls for what they think is a discount. Im not sure why but chances are you can do better not bundling anything. Once you bundle they know you are less likely to switch every year or two.

4. With my wife and I as the only drivers on our cars and our kids at the time OWN cars with their own insurance I never paid a lot.

It seems like some insurance companies handle things different. Some want all licensed people in the household on the insurance for every vehicle. Some, you can EXCLUDE drivers so that certain drivers are not permitted to drive certain vehicles but it saves some money.

Our insurance is crazy, it's one of the reasons I'm downsizing from one car to two - the Bolt is leaving us on Wednesday.

I feel ya. We've been with Geico for 22 years. When we added our 16 YO old daughter to our car ins, it went crazy. 5 cars and 4 drivers, all clean driving records and no accidents.

So, $3200.00 for 5 cars with Liability only, so a little bit over $600.00 for each car. I pay about $422.00 a year with just Liability.
You really need to shop around for Insurance.

The Revoke License thing makes no sense, the only 1 who can do that is the MVA!

Who do you insure with

Always the case with a young driver living home. I was criticized, then praised by friends and family years ago when my son first started driving. I had him get his own policy and told the insurance company he wouldn't be driving my cars since he had his own car registered in his name. My logic was simple, God-forbid he got into an accident I wasn't going to get sued and lose my house. I got the cost with him on my policy and with him on his own, his own was a lot more. I paid him the difference. I still suggest that to friends, family is all grown up now. Insurance right now is an inflated rip off, shop around!!!!!

All you can do is find a good independent agent or broker with a wide array of companies and shop your policy.
While you will never know for sure until you try, you will probably find it difficult to beat Erie.

For 15+ years I had Liberty Mutual for home and auto. Never shopped, just paid. This last renewal, there was such a large premium increase, I did shop. I ended up going with NJM which is a smaller, more localized insurer and saved about $5,000.00 and actually increased my coverage with an umbrella policy. Trust me, it pays to shop and it's so easy, why not? You can get a quote on-line in about 15 minutes by entering your details. I have a friend insured by State Farm and they told him when he questioned the increase that when the fires burn in California or the hurricanes decimate Florida, we all gonna pay. NJM doesn't exist in those states so they are not impacted like the big, national carriers I suppose.

The word liability showed up in several of the above posts. You should always carry at least a $1,000,000 liability umbrella over all of your policies. These are not expensive in the scheme of things. Right now, maybe $200/ a year or thereabouts. Protects against large lawsuits for both home and auto (falling on your sidewalk, car accidents with injuries, etc).

In California, I pay about $3300 a year for 4 cars with liability. 3 drivers including my 18yr old son. No accidents or tickets. I have shopped around multiple times with multiple companies and tried bundling with home insurance which is also a rip off.

Could be worth shopping around. I've had to do this in the past when insurance company just keeps going up and up with no change. Shop around and voila, significantly cheaper than current carrier.

Shop around if you haven't - but yes, more cars = more cost.

Even before my kids were 16, having 3 cars on a policy was 50% more than 2. Its counter-intuitive, because I can only drive one at a time.

Then added daughter and it doubled the cost.

Then I put the 3rd car in the daughters name, and got her own insurance. 3 same cars now on 2 different policies. Pretty much still same.

$3200 for 5 cars sounds pretty reasonable actually, especially for young drivers. The liability is the big part. Collision and comprehensive are pretty cheap if you never make claims.

Age of the car also does not seem to matter much, around here at least.

I'm at $5400 with state farm for 5 cars, 2 full coverage 3 liability. Only my wife and I driving and no accidents on record.. Its hurting my feelings.. Newest thing I have is my 2016 Ram. Samurai and 88 F-150 are surprisingly expensive to insure. I also hear GA is one of the most expensive states to have car insurance in..

FWIW if you have a Costco membership you might look into their sponsored insurance. It was quite a bit cheaper than what I was paying before, actually much less than the Costco membership itself.

We pay about $2800 for 2 cars full coverage, 2 old fogey drivers.
Two fogeys here, three vehicles. From what I understand 70 is a magic age and warrants an age related price hike. Oh joy!! I might consider two vehicles if/when I hit that magic number. I used to joke around with my mother, and told her "nothing good comes from growing old." She'd laugh and say you're right, but the other option is worse.

2 cars, kids gone on their own but nothing changed much, always paid around these prices. As @2strokeNorthstar posted. You need to shop around. The internet makes it easy. Im loyal to no company. Low price always wins. I NEVER had my home bundled with my cars because the price was always higher than me going with separate companies. I switch anytime I find a better price and also do not necessarily wait until the end of a policy period to switch.

This below is progressive. Before anyone says anything I have "Uninsured Motorist" Coverage as indicated in the line above.
