My nearly 17 year old got her license. We wont let her drive our cars yet as she is emerging with driving is neurodivergent and has ADHD. It took 3 tries of road test with last being perfect score. She’s inconsistent.

Do I need to add her to my policy if driving is not often. I understand she is covered if she has permission to drive our cars.

What is advantage of paying the $458 for 7 months of policy?

In my state all licensed drivers living with you and not covered by other insurance must be on your policy.
I suspect this is pretty standard with ALL insurance companies (not sure why the "state" would care). Reason they do this is it's too easy for a family to pretend "oh, they never drive...." and then they do and something happens.

Read your policy, as the exact details vary from state to state, but yeah you need to add her if she drives at all

My policy says all listed drivers have to be declared. Cut & dry. But the penalty only comes into play if someone drives, wrecks, causes a claim, and was undeclared. So to read between the lines, an undeclared driver is not a problem, only if they don't drive, and only per my company.

@andrew_j - check out STREETSURVIVAL.ORG for your daughter. Its a good hands on emergency class done in your vehicle with an instructor. Covers all emergency braking, wet skid pad, emergency lane change etc.

I'll try to send a link later to my pictures/videos. I know I posted somewhere but might be on the other forums.

Your insurance carrier will find out eventually. I waited a year or two when my daughter got her driver's license years ago. My agent's office eventually called me to inform me that they knew she got her license (on the date of) and she had to be added to my policy unless I could prove she had a policy of her own.

With my next kid, I let them know the day of. I have a 3rd taking his road test in a month or so.

Just don't own any new cars, lol. 17 and 19 year olds on mine. I think mine doubled; the liability only vehicles were ok, but wowzer it hurt on the newer cars. I wish it had only be $458...

I'd look at a defensive driving course. A lady out in Colorado has several different ones under the FAAST racing. I took a beginner driving course to get my scca regional racing license. She also offers defensive driving classes. From my reading insurance companies really lower rates with something like this vs years ago.

The advantage?

If she crashes, she will be covered.

If you fail to notify them that someone living with you got their license, they could deny coverage. Depends on what your policy says, but that notification is probably required.

Whether she drives the car or not.

Right or wrong don’t ask don’t tell🙃
With that said when I was a kid, I paid my own insurance and when I had kids they paid their own insurance.
When they had a car, only their name was on the title of the car insulating me

Based on the responses, safe to say you will be calling your agent tomorrow to add her, huh ?

What does the 7 months pertain to ? Does she turn 18 in 7 months ? If so, that changes nothing unless you kick her out on her birthday or she buys a car with her name on the title (and gets insurance).

I contacted an agent and they stated when she starts driving on her own add her to your policy. We have not gotten there despite her having a license.

That's risky.... And your agent advising you to do this will NOT make it okay on the insurance company's end if a claim happens.

Licensed driver in your household? ADD HER TO YOUR POLICY NOW.

Also ask about a $1M umbrella policy it may save some money.
Snapped Telephone poles, bent guardrails and driving through you neighbors living room are getting expensive these days.

I am discussing some local reported mishaps - not in any way impugning your Daughter's (future) driving.

My PLUP covers you and your family members doing stupid things - even slander; costs around 100 bucks per year.

I have State Farm.

insurance companies routinely cross reference drivers license addresses and policy holders addresses for matches. they will find out sooner or later.

if they have ready access to your vehicles you should buy insurance for them . if they take your vehicle , with or without your permission and get into an accident , they may deny coverage

I have a 16yo and 19yo. Both have insurance on our vehicles. total for them is $6000/year accident and ticket free. Enjoy the cheap insurance.
