Car Care Nut blames counterfeit oil filter for engine damage

No way to know if those filters were just different suppliers of the same part number and not necessarily a counterfeit.

I can see it now. Dealerships asking for the box the filter came in they claim ruined your engine. Knowing you didn't save it.

Unless that filter came apart and clogged up oil passages, I'd doubt it would cause a failure.

One should also question the installation and filter condition prior to installation as both are unknowns

Toyota VVTI issues are well known

In the current state of things in the aftermarket anything is possible. Anything that is critical to the engine performance is OEM from local dealer.

The prices at local auto parts is very close to OEM so just get the good stuff.
The aftermarket certainly has made it an easy decision with all their supply chain, non-compete greed, haven't they?

Just buy another filter and show them the box.

At my first oil change, a Dealer purchased Toyota ( made in Thailand) Denso filter provided inadequate oil pressure from my Yaris. I Put the O.E. factory filter back on and all was well, bought ANOTHER new Toyota Thailand - with the laser hologram anti tamper tape - and that had inadequate oil pressure AGAIN. Put the Old used factory Toyota JAPAN filter back on and no issues.

Somthing is going worng. In terms of construction, the Thailand Denso looked fine, so I can only guess and point to the media permeability.
The O.E. Factory unit was foam media, made in japan like Lexus units. Maybe the VVTi has special needs - as do most of them.
what are the well known and properly FMeA'd VVTi issues?

A foam media Denso genuine Toyota Parts filters - reserved for Lexus parts. Not for Toyota. too bad, and tough luck, plebes:

Cummins seizes millions of dollars worth of counterfeit product coming out of Asia every single year...there's a big market out there for counterfeiters clearly. I think I've mentioned this elsewhere, but at least for Fleetguard products, we do NOT sell directly through online retailers like Amazon, eBay, etc. so buyer beware.

You should hear the camshaft phasers on my Navigator in the drive through if I power brake it just a little. Bring it up to 1200 RPM or so with my foot on the brake. Sounds way worse than that. Using different filters or grades of oil does not change it. They just need to be replaced.

[edit] not trying to say the same is true for the vehicle in the video. he got a bad filter apparently, replace it and move on with your life.
