Can't wait to get MY car back

Well my car is at the auto body shop getting repaired. I had a headlight bender with a Nissan Xterra last week. The Asian exchange student saw a car coming from his right too late and did a second stop at the stop sign. I saw the car and didn't expect him to stop a second time. I swerved to the right as hard as I could. Contact with headlight and left front corner panel. It was my fault at the end of the day legally. His second rather late stop didn't help but that does not matter. His back bumper was past the stop sign and his front end was out in the road. Ohh and 3 inches of snow/slush on the road didn't help. Again none of that matters. It was my fault at the end of the day. I hit him going less than 10 mph. Only superficially scratched his right rear bumper. I asked him to meet me at the Target across the street to work out details. That intersection is very busy at 7pm. I thought that was rather clear. I sent to Target. Waited 20 minutes. Drove all around parking lot. He never showed up. I was quite irritated. Later that night I drive around my area and found his Xterra. Took pictures of the scratches and license plate. Just to document what happened to his vehicle.

Well this deal caused $2400 worth of damage to my Altima 3.5 coupe. I have very good insurance with only a $100 deductible. Well it it obvious that with snow in our area the collision shop is very busy. So it was going to be over 2 weeks until I get my car back. And I am wanting my car back sooner than later.

I got a rental 2015 Nissan Altima 2.5 S. It's all right. But I can easily see why these CVTs are not doing well. It is "attempting" to find a lower gear at all speeds. This makes the car run in a poor fashion. It runs at 1400 rpm cruising at 55 mph and less than 2k rpm cruising at near 80. It has VERY delayed power response to throttle input. I just don't really enjoy driving it a whole lot. My car... It has great throttle response, sounds good running at cruising speeds at 2k rpm plus. My car only dies the fuel saving deal when driving lower speeds less than 45 mph. Above that it's doesn't do that. Plus my car has a manual shift mode so I can avoid it being in 5th gear going 25 mph.

So, I can't wait to get MY car back. I enjoy driving my car a lot. A lot better than this newer Nissan Altima 2.5.

CVTs don't have different gears. RPM is irrelevant because you have no idea what the ratio is or should be.

It behaves/selects gear ratio differently..... It chooses a higher gear or ratio when at cruising speed.. It obvious in the new 2015 version. IF you hit the gas it lowers the ratio.... Aka to a lower gear. This car is at 1400-1500 rpm while cruising. Any peddle input and it HAS to change gear ratio to a " lower" gear ratio.

How many cars cruise at 1400 rpm going 60 mph??? How many champ?? 0. Except these cars with these CVTs. My car does not do that. It cruises at 2200 rpm going 79 mph. Not 1400-1500.

I hit someone similarly at a stop sign entering a highway when I first started commuting to college. It was a black Z71 Tahoe, brand new with a temp tag on it. The driver stopped and waited for wide open space and went forward and stopped again. I was going to roll right out behind him so when he started to go I looked down the road while moving forward and I love tapped it bumper to bumper when he stopped unnecessarily.

I quickly got out and saw the trailer hitch receiver and knew what I hit. The driver got out of the car screaming failing arms and started walking towards me. I asked him why the heck did he stop a 2nd time with no cars coming. I noticed the Tahoe moving away from us slowly while he is yelling. He left it in gear and now it's going into oncomming traffic. He noticed and ran to jump in, must have been embarrassed because he just took off. He never looked for damage. I still have a square impression in my front bumper.

My father's 2013 Subaru has a CVT. It takes a lot of getting used to. After spending a week driving it, I will try my best not to buy a car with a CVT. His is especially annoying if you're creeping along in traffic. I've driven other cars with them and didn't like the transmission at all.

I tell ya the truth demarpaint the CVT on my 3.5 Altima is actually pretty darn good. I enjoy driving it a lot. It's fast, responsive, and a lot less annoying than the one I'm driving now. I will say in slow speeds it does choose to run a ridiculously high gear ratio... I pulled my car from drive to manual mode at 25 mph one time and it was in 5th gear ratio. Thus the annoying droning sound at that speed. So, I can shift to manual mode to get rid of this phenomenon. But I certainly understand your thought on CVTs. Again, I really like my 3.5 VQ/CVT combo really well.

The newest model car I've driven with a CVT was a 2014, maybe the later models are better? I haven't driven a Nissan with one yet so I can't comment, but my dad's Subaru is annoying. My mother doesn't like it either. My father said he's used to it, but he misses his Buick. lol I miss his Buick too!!!!!!!!!!

Im very pleased with MY cars VQ/CVT combo. I've got 130k miles with no problems. The car runs great and transmission is FAR better than the one in the rental I'm driving until my car is repaired.

CVTs have computer controls, and the computer controls control the ratio...ratio being the difference between input and output speed, and inversely to torque.

Hired a Nissan Maxima a couple years ago, and when in sport mode, there were definite ratio selection, and using the selector, "fixed" ration operation.

Infinitely variable has theoretically infinite middle positions. Fact is that programming defines a finite number of them.

Exactly Shannow. The ratio is computer controlled. In manual mode it gives the driver the control over that ratio control. I used this function going down from Lovers Leap at 3300 ft of elevation down to 1500 east of there with this manual mode. I selected the lower gear ratios to help keep from using the brakes. Which this worked outstandingly well. I barely had to touch the brake dropping 1800 feet in elevation.
In regular drive mode the computer selects the gear ratio. Which can explain 5th gear going 25 mph. A way the CVT is attempting to save gas.

I don't know if they have fixed it, but the 2012 Sentras would lug the engine around at 1100RPM all day. The 4 cylinder in that car is just not balanced enough to accelerate to 55MPH at 1100RPM most of the way.

My 5.7L M6 will do a tad under 1400 rpm in 6th at 60 mph. If the speedo is registering a little high, which is common for these cars, then it's even lower. A math computation with the gearing and tires says it should be 1345 rpm at 60 mph (89 mph at 2000 rpm). I spend little time in 6th though unless on the highway doing 70 mph or more. 60 mph at 2000 rpm in 5th works better all around.
