Check the laws in your state. In most, I think, waterways are public property unless they are surrounded entirely by private land, i.e. a pond on someone's property is 100% theirs and private. If this canal opens into a public body of water, the canal is also public.
Yes the "navigable water" doctrine which I think is based in common law. There may be private property on both sides, but no one owns the waterway itself. A person can boat on it if they are going to a place they are allowed to be.

Everyone who has punctured tires stays right there. It’s not like they have four spares. How are they going to drive away with four flats? How’s that gonna work out? They’ll probably sit there for hours waiting for a tow.

We have a fenced and gated property. It works as intended and keeps people who have no business on our property from trespassing.

It actually did open into a large state owned lake and river. It is just that the law does very little good when one can possibly run into a wild , out of control and very angry bunch of guys heavily armed , some full of liquor in the middle of nowhere. Some of whom are flat our crazy drunks, thinking they still control the swamps and could even be poachers.

I have met the mysterious girl. She and my cousin that lives with us have gone out looking for boyfriends recently. Both are taking 2 step lessons at a local country bar.
The blue Jeep she was driving that day was totaled in a horrendous accident. Thankfully the girl is ok although she did break some bones and got a scar on her eyebrow.
First and foremost, its a clearly visible deterrent. If the readers here cannot wrap their minds around that and understand what a deterrent means, I just can't help them. This deterrent would stop 99% of the trespassers.
Second, who would continue to drive over it to blow out all 4 tires? Makes no sense. Even if they did, then they would have to get a tow. Tow trucks operate everywhere. Shame on the 1% if they are too stupid and drive over spikes. Serves them right to wait and pay for a tow. Even the stupidest would then learn their lesson and not go back again. Pretty simple.
