Sense of smell is a weird thing. I lost my sense of smell for an indeterminate length of time a couple years ago. You can go a long time with no sense of smell before realizing it. It wasn't until I was with a group of people all complaining about a foul smell that I couldn't smell that I realized I'd lost my sense of smell.
