Canadian winter and turbo engine...

You're over thinking this.
PP 5W-30 (and not PU 5W-30) will be a better winter choice and your engine will run just as "smooth" if not smoother. In fact it's likely preferable for year round use as it's almost always better to run the lightest oil recommended.

If you really want to optimize your viscosity to the way you drive install an oil pressure gauge.

To be fair to SOPUS, it probably does exceed GF-5 cleansing and protection requirements, but GF-5 is also (mainly) about fuel economy, and with an HT/HS of 3.7 cP, there is no way it could be GF-5 certified.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it.

Give PP 5w-30 a try and see how it goes. Your engine may sound just as well.

If you're leaning towards synthetic, Petro-Canada Supreme Synthetic 5w-30 is another option. Its cold weather specs are decent, although I haven't compared them to PP or PU, though. It does have better NOACK than what's listed on the PU spec sheet you provided.

And no, 5w-40 isn't going to be GF-5. It may meet some of the requirements, but not all, so will not be GF-5 approved. This is one issue where other oil companies could take a cue from Petro-Canada. PC tends to show formal approvals different from "meets or exceeds" statistics, so there's no ambiguity; they're particularly good at that in their HDEO data sheets. They even list somewhere on there site a warning that 0w-40 and 5w-40 will not be GF-4 or GF-5 approved because of the viscosity.

I remember if my other optima last year i had 5w40 in it, before a little accident but our winter wasn't very cold last year!! but it ran smooth

Typical marketing fluff, using ambiguous statements that make it sounds like it is certified to a spec when it isn't.

Given what the manual says, I'd still say to use 5W-30. But by no means should you drain the oil you just put in - it'll be just fine.

What does your manual state? According to the quoted post, you can use API SM or higher or ILSAC GF-4 or better. You should be able to find many oils in either 5W-30 or 5W-40 that have at least either one or the other.

Manual says 5w30 or 5w40 for all weather .
Engine oil *1 *2
(drain and refill)
Recommends
4.6 l (4.86 US qt.)
API Service SM*
3
,
ILSAC GF-4 or above

Was at the dealer today, regional manager was around, and he said you are better off running 5w-40 year round as they see really good results in these engines, and that even hyundai recommends it for performance and better operation .

He said it is a winter oil as well and a very good oil the PU 5w-40
