What are you seeing for oil prices in Canada? Why the big jump for synthetic compared to south of the border?
Best I have found;
Tech 2000 - $1.98/L - &7.96/5L
Tech 2000 synth - approx. $5.50/L - $22+/5L
Major Brands - $3.49/L - $16.49/5L
Mobil 1 - $8.46/L

I was just reading a post about SuperTech synth for $15 a jug! That's less than major brand dino here!

Seems like we get ripped!

Castrol GTX on sale at CT friday only 10/30 1.99 a litre.By the time I get there after work everything will be sold out.I bought 4 cases of Tech 2000 at .98 a litre couple yrs ago.Just about all of it gone.Been looking for oil deals but really nothing around in lower mainland [Vancouver].

We are getting ripped here. I'm across the border at Niagara Falls,NY and Buffalo,NY quite often. If you saw the huge selection and low prices they have in WalMarts over there, you'd never be able to feel good about buying oil in Canada again. It isn't all roses mind you. I was browsing a Pimp Boys and later an Advanced Auto Porn, and those places often price oil like NAPA or Carquest - sort of full list price for some things, but incredibily cheap for others. Fr'example, Quaker State QS Advanced Synthetic was actually just a bit more expensive in both of those places than it is here. But they also have all of those rebates that are never offered in Canada.

Canadian AMSOIL Preferred Customer pricing for.
ASL 5W30 $6.70
ATM 10W30 $6.70
XLF 5W30 $5.55
XLM 5W20 $5.55
AME 15W40 $6.10

Yep, they make fine profits up here. C$ used to be weaker but now it is close to equal to US$. Seems that the currency change (rising C$) was simply not reflected in product prices. Instead, companies simply pocketed extra profits.

Last year I built a stash from from CT sales around $10/jug, which is about $2.2/L. Found some reasonable deals at Costco and other places for the same price. These days you only get #@$%! 10W30 high viscosity #@$%! that is obsolete and/or find empty shelves where oil on sale is supposed to be.

Of course, you can ask for rain check but I don't bother. Already have mu stash

Otherwise you could look into your oil use and maybe extend it. I don't use long OCIs, but try to make sure I get a full useful life from the oil. For instance, I use synthetic during winter so I won't dump it at 5K km. I'll push it to 8K km which is still a modest OCI.

cp3, don't exclude XD-3 0w30 synthetic (or 0w40). I know the 0w30 is ~$5/L at a local Esso distributor ... but that is expected to increase in price over the next 2 months.

EDIT: Greaser beat me to it by 2 minutes.

Watch for Canadian Tire sales. Every month or so they'll have some brand 50% off, or free oil filters when you buy a jug, or something like that. I got some Pennzoil 10W30 for $1.64/L. Not bad.

We would all be screwed up here without canadian tire. If you're the type to stick with one oil (at least not jump back and forth every OCI) like me you've gotta have a little stash to hold you over until the next sale.

That GTX at CTC would be nice but I need 5W30. Their flyer is also showing Penzoil Platinum for $24.49/4.73L jug, if they have any left tomorrow I might throw that in the Saturn for the rest of the winter.
I was looking at the XD-3 at Wallyworld, I think it was about $23/jug. I was considering synth for the winter as the Saturn doesn't have a block heater. If it's still going next winter it'll definetly have synth in it (and a block heater!), maybe the G6 too.
Is there really anything wrong with the Tech2000? Ya it's re-refined but can it really be that bad? The Saturn should apparently be kept to 5000km OCI anyway and has lived to almost 320000km on the bulk oil at the dealer, according to my buddy that I bought it from. Is the bluk dealer oil that much better?

Oh ya, the Astro I had got FRAMs and whatever oil was cheap, including Tech2000 on 6-10 month 15-20000km OCIs!

It had over 303000 on the clock when I traded it on the G6!
That was before I started reading on here!

The dealer bulk oil is just Petro-Canada dino. It's supposed to be pretty good oil.

I just load up when a good deal comes along. Found some Castrol GTX 5w20 at Walmart for $11 for 5l jugs and bought the whole shelf. I just hope to use it all before it expires.

Why us anythng other than XD3?????

Sid, in all honesty that oil is too thick for your Civic. I know that GC is too thick for my wife's Civic, and it's almost the same viscosity as XD3. These engines really do prefer a 5w20, or at least a 5w30 on the low end of the 30wt range.

Well, I just dumped some Tech2000 out of the Saturn and that will be the last time! It had 4500km on it and it was BLACK! Has felt sluggish and noisy for the last 2000km. Fresh load of Castrol and it feels and sounds better. May be a deal but I don't think I trust it. Guess I'll start trying to stock up on the sales.

Sales are the ONLY place to get a good oil price in Canada - CT being the most predictable at offering something.

Recent thing that fries me is that W-M has upped the price of thier 'Tech 2000' oil change from $17.96 to $21.96! At $17.96, it was a heck of a deal, b/c T2000 is preety good oil, but now at $21.96, it is ONLY $2.00 cheaper than a Pennzoil oil change - might as well get the Pennzoil. Now i do feel that T2000 is an excellent oil, but still, to take a change with a cheap house brand, there should be more of an incentive!

I can't say that T2000 isn't good oil. The Saturn 1.9 is apparently hard on oil, so maybe in a different engine I'd try it again. In fact before reading here I used it in my Astro with no problems. However after doing the oil change in my G6 which was last done by Jiffy Lube I won't be taking either anywhere if I can help it. Drain plug and filter were way to tight. I'm not sure I'd trust someone at Wallyworld to do any better.
