Either Canadian Tire saw my rants, or the higher Canadian dollar is beginning to have an effect, or upcoming product availability is driving prices down. It's probably the latter two, since no one listens to me anyhow.

The $16 K&Ns oil filters have dropped by $3, and are actually a couple bucks cheaper than that right now, due to a sale. The Fram Extended Guards are down to around $11.50. It seems that the prices are the same regardless of the application. Selection wasn't great. There were maybe six to ten different applications for each. Of course, the FL1A equivalent was available for both brands. Oddly, the Audi 5 cylinder filter was also available in both brands. I didn't buy any, since I have a few Wix, Motorcraft, and Bosch filters lying around. I should be fine for a little while.

Canadian Tire is supposed to be introducing Mobil 1 filters this month. I have no idea on the pricing. I almost fell over seeing filter selection improve and premium filters at an almost palatable price.

I sincerely hope they increase some shelf space, though. The Motomaster (Canadian Tire house brand) filters had a huge amount of shelf space devoted to them at my local store. As I said, the K&Ns and the Extended Guards had hardly any space reserved for them. The Orange Can fared no better, which is really odd for Canadian Tire. Six to ten varieties of the Orange Can doesn't strike me as a huge selection, considering the Wall o' Fram they used to have going.

I did have a bit of a laugh, though. The K&N oil filters are all locked up. That wasn't the laugh, however. In the same, locked case, they had a couple Bosch filters locked up at $5.49. I suppose they were a "steal," since they were cheaper than the Orange Cans. An $11.50 Extended Guard is on the open shelf, and a $5.49 Bosch is locked in a cage. Okay.

Canadian Tire has been a rip-off store for years now. They have no real competition, and have been able to jack up their prices at will. Even Part Source which could be a competitors is owned by Canadian Tire. They were at one time the low price leader (and also low quality leader) but that is gone. They are a "sale rotator" and have a bunch of items they drop 50% on a regular basis to make people think they are getting a deal. I only buy their oil or auto parts when they are on sale, because that is the price that they should be in the first place. My daughter now works there, and gets 13% discount on any item even if on sale, and that helps but only a bit.

As far as the dollar goes, they have now skimed off enough money on their prices that they can throw us a bone by dropping their prices a few percent.

I get Carquest filters now...made by WIX, $7 for the blue, $4 for the red. I do buy the Quaker State filters at CT when they go on sale. We get ripped off hard in Canada on oil and filters.

You just have to be more carefull on how you buy. Costco, TSC, and sometimes Walmart have good prices. CT and Partsource does only when on sale. Most stores like Zellers, and local supermarkets have gone out of oil selling. Supermarkets used to sell it at cost as a loss-leader back in the 99 cents a liter/quart days

That we do. I'm lucky and get my Wix 51515 for around $5 from a local parts store. Aside from that, it's crazy.

I just don't like Walmart's Wall o' Fram. Prices on filters in this country are bad enough. The selection is worse. If I want Orange Cans, there's another local parts store that gives me a substantial discount. I don't need to pay CT's or Walmart's prices on them, especially since I don't want them in the first place. Our Walmarts don't even have Extended Guards, which I would use without hesitation.

Superstore isn't bad for oil prices, if you're not looking at something too unique. CT right now has something like 35% off all Pennzoil products, from PYB to PP. Like you said, though, that sale just brings the price down to where it should be, and certainly is not discount compared to what's paid south of the border.

You appear to be a filter connoisseur.

I'd only but filters from ct if you have a wackload of ct money to spend. Went to the states recently and picked up a pureone filter for 5.99 tax in, can't even get the ctire branded filter for that price.

Yessir. Went from Fram to Chinese....I guess that's the only way to go when Fram gets too expensive :)

I've ordered them from autopartsway.ca for the Audi. Their prices on the Bosch, Mann, and Mahle filters are hard to beat. For the F150, the Full and NPN are only marginally cheaper than what I can get Wix for locally.

And they seem much better made than the previous ones.. They are definitely beefier. Someone cut one open a while ago, if I recall correctly it looked very decent. I have no idea where that thread is anymore though.

It will be interesting to see if they price them the same as the K&N filters, which they should be since I believe these filters both sell for the same price in the US (someone correct me if I'm wrong). If they put them on sale for close to $10 I will start using them on the Corvette, otherwise I'll keep buying the Fram Extended Guards (as long as PartSource keeps putting them on sale for $9.99)

I'd love to see us get M1 filters. They look like one of the best out there.

I've only ever seen 1 M1 filter - a car visiting from the US came to the WM I worked at for an OC, and it had an M1 on it. Looked like a very cool filter......

When I bought my 98 Firebird Formula brand new I was taking a lot of trips to the US back then, so I bought a lot of Mobil 1 filters for that car back then, as well as the AC Delco Ultraguard Gold filters.

In the case of both of those filters, they felt extremely heavy, the canister strength on both of them has to be pretty good.

For the longest time I've been annoyed with the fact that our filter selection up here isn't that great, but now I've got a new problem, deciding which one of all these filters I'm gonna run!
