It seems like it has a decent amount of low end tq, I think 177ft/lbs at 1800rpms if I remember correctly. would this be sufficient to trailor a couple of motorcycles? (aprox 1000lbs in tow plus a couple of adults and gear) The only reason I ask is because I was looking at those and the gas would cost me about 400.00 a year versus 1500.00/yr for my V6 truck. Huge difference!

i think (key word there) that you can tow up to 2000# with a tdi. i looked at vw's site and couldn't find it, but this number does come to mind.

Go to their web site www.vw.com to get the bad news - those cars are only good for around 900 lbs, basically meaning 4 adults and their luggage. Between their unibody construction, front wheel drive and turbo, I doubt towing anything would be a good idea with a Golf. I love the hatchback versatility, ride, handling and great gas mileage, though - I had a tough time believing it was diesel when I test drove one. Great interior, too!

Alright, thanks guys. Deosnt look like its good for anything other than hauling teenagers. Never-the-less its impressive for a such a small diesel engine. What caught my eye is the gas mileage kicks arse for a non-hybrid. HMMM.. Wait till they make it a TDI hybrid, that thing could get 100 miles a gallon.

In Europe there's also a 2 liter version of that TDI engine in Golf which puts out 140hp and 236 ft-lb of torque at 1750rpm, yet the payload is still only around 1000-1100 lbs. Still gets around 50 mpg though.

In the Golf's case, I wouldn't expect that the powertrain is what is holding it back. The Golf is a pretty small unibody car which is not really designed for towing. The structural strength is probably more of an issue than the engine.
