Can you say sludge?!?!

This is from my 1991 Nissan Sentra SE w/ GA16DE engine and 182,000 miles. This car has had 3-4K mile changes with conventional oil for the first 130K, then 5-6K changes with AMSOIL till now.

The car did it's first 100K on very short trips and rarely got to temp, which is what I assume made this mess.

I currently have started the first rinse phase of Auto RX to clean up the sludge. I will be opening the filters and doing more after shots of the engine to see if it works.

I am VERY sceptical of additives, but AutoRX is highly recommended by so many here.

Always wanted to do that. Yes the ARX should help. Any driveability problems prompting you to take the cover off?

No problems, just curious.

In fact, the car runs great, gets 36-40MPG, and has been unbelievably reliable. So, I am not expecting AutoRX, to improve driveability or mileage.

I did a compression check and I had the following:
205
200
195
205

Standard is 192, so I am guessing I have some carbon build-up that I just ordered some FP to hopefully take care of that.

Wow that looks pretty bad.

What would it look like with 15K amsoil OCIs?
I guess some engines are a lot more prone to sludge then others.

I think I would warm the engine up and then pour Neutra on the head to start the varnish removal process.

Good to hear from you John. I used to be Mobetsy on the Jeeps Unlimited BB. I still pull my 190 FW Horizon with my 96 ZJ. With wife at home with kids, got to keep that heap alive for a couple more years.

from the result Arron got on his 240 i don't think you will have any problems getting you Sentra cleaned up!

If you had run Amsoil or Mobil 1 or Redline from the beginning, you wouldn't have this mess to deal with - even with the short trip driving conditions....

I'd get a can of the Amsoil flush,along w/ 4 qts of a 15w40 petroleum diesel oil and a new Amsoil or Mobil 1 filter. Add the new oil and leave the level 1/2 quart low to make room for the flush.
Fast idle the engine IN NEUTRAL @ 2X the normal idle speed for a full 30 minutes. Drain the oil/cleaner and change the filter again.

I'd then install a synthetic diesel formulated oil like the Series 3000 or 10w-40. Run that oil for 12,000 miles with filter changes every 3000 miles.

That procedure should clean things up nicely ....

You know you've got serious sludge when there is dark varnish on the cam lobes!

Auto-RX should help, but dont expect immediate results like Aarons test.. took some time but in the end was worth it!

I did the AMSOIL flush at 130K when I switched to AMSOIL synthetic. I ran mostly Series 2000 0W-30. Then just recently switched to the new 5W-40. I may try running the Series 3000 to continue to clean after the Auto RX treatment.

Can you say sludge?!?!
