Seafoam sludge flush before and after

As for this thread itself, here's a summary, for clarity ...

This is an interim-application thread. The OP used the product and documented the top end under the valve cover at the start of the experiment. The oil-pan pix are just to show that nothing really came down and clogged the pick-up. He'll then take some photos a while down the road for comparison to show the progress (or lack thereof) from the application.

Honestly, IMO, it would have been better to hold off on this thread until the experiment was complete and tell the whole story all at one time. But he's chosen to parse it out, a bit at a time. Once you understand the sequence, it makes a little more sense.

Just to let you know, I also use SF in all my 5 vehicles. Here's a pic of the top end at 114k miles on my '05 BMW 330ic using SF with Penzoil platinum 5W30. My '01 540i looks the same.

And I have an 07 Mazda3 with 2.3 that looks the same after 145k miles, having received nothing but 3k mile oil changes (MC 5w20 for appx 50k, then Mobil1 5w20). :)

I hope I'm not beating a dead horse, so I'll be quick

1) Run Valvoline Restore and Protect for a full OCI at least. Im using it myself, doing my third oil change with it tomorrow.

2) Don't mix MMO with the Valvoline. Just my opinion.

Do people still consider SF a good flush solvent? Why???

Unless the OP was having issues with consumption or engine performance, what was the point? Just keep changing the oil. Who cares about that MINOR bit of sludge and mostly varnish?

Perhaps the same people who clean behind their stove and refrigerator regularly?

Not sure which way you’re going with that. If by behind the fridge you mean loose debris that has no effect on anything, I agree. If you mean clean the condenser coils every so often, then I’d say that’s a bad analogy if the OP isn’t experiencing any negative aspects of the buildup. Hard to tell, of course, but if there’s no consumption and no performance issues/MPG concerns, then a light solvent flush seems like a waste of time.

Is it safe to put in 1/10 of the seafoam over 10 short OCI to clean it out slowly? or would this also dislodge a large chunk of sludge causing blockage?

Isn't Seafoam to be used only for short duration - 20 minutes or so?

It seems like a poor idea to dilute your oil with such a product and keep it in the engine over a long perod of time and many miles. How would it affect things inside the engine.

You can argue that it's a small amount over a short time or miles, and that it shouldn't hurt anything. Some here may do just that. How short? How would you determine the ideal time or miles? What might the cumulative effect be over following this procedure multiple time?

Not a good idea, IMO.
