Can Straight-grade motor oils contain VII's?

never thought about it I guess >140 or so would mean VII.
or a wide Multi vis grade like a 10/40 or 5w40 or 15/50

Bruce, does the current J300 spec require non-Newtonian oils (i.e., oils with VI improvers) to be labeled as multi-grade? If so, that would preclude blending any straight grades with VI improvers, IMO.

Yes. Same with Amsoil's ACD SAE 30. It's a straight grade that meets the cold cranking and cold pumping specs of a 10W, thus it could be labeled a 10w30.
