Can extreme cold ( 0 to -20 ) for 2 - 4 days cause an engine oil filter to become loose and seep / leak oil ?

Now that you mentioned it , last time I was a Wally World there were oil spots everywhere , and it's winter . I thought it was because of spilled canola oil .

Replaced with PH9688 . Checked it about 4 times and good for now . Have had few nights below 15 .

I could only see this happening if you installed the filter barely hand snug on an aluminum engine that was piping hot, then short tripped consistently. Even then the core reason is the filter wasnt tightened enough.

Not piping hot , was well over 3/4 of a turn . Same as the new FRAM Extra guard PH9688 . Will possibly check it later after being driven .

Since I have been on an oil filter adapter kick with their o rings and all that, I have to add that leak point is a possibility. Same rules of contraction, heat and cold, apply to the adapter. Some are held by one hollow bolt which holds the adapter to the block with an o ring gasket, plus keeps the inlet and outlet oil supplies separated by simple o rings on the hollow bolt.

Had a seep issue on 2 different vehicles. 3.6 'nox and a 5.3 Tahoe. Both with Mann made Wix filters.
And yes, they were tight, I have 46 yrs as a technician grip. Had to crank them down with a filter wrench to stop the seep.
Never had this issue in subzero weather before on any vehicle.
Needless to say no more Wix for me. My other GM 3.6, in a Traverse had no issue with a AC Gold filter.
Just saw a post on a split shell on a Wix filter on a Traverse site I'm on this week also so that double confirmed my no more Wix.
