No, it's not about hiding information from their competitors. All of the big players have at least one lab dedicated to formulating and testing new oil. These labs are full of spendy equipment and smart chemists who will have little difficulty dissecting whatever the competition is selling. The big companies ALREADY know what the other guys are up to.

Their real worry is that the customers, if enlightened to any degree, might gain enough knowledge to begin to ask awkward questions. Care to explain?" or "Your premium tier of oil is not really that much different from your mainstream offering. What's up with that?" Those are questions they don't want to answer.

Instead, it's much easier to stonewall, and promote your product with "Think with your Dipstick" level commercials. (The average motor oil ad contains 30% "Vroom-vroom noises, 50% overused adjectives, 20% misleading specs, and ZERO % real information.)
