Called 3 oil companies today..!

I've had some free time and I've been intrigued by additive packages oil companies add to their oils for additional lubricating and anti wear detergents and longevity of the oils...

I'm interested in the zinc, moly, phosphorus and calcium levels of oils and their desired effects...
Motor oil I was told a while back is like Pizza.....You can get dough and add Ketchup on it and a few slices of American Cheese and technically you have a Pizza....You can market it to be the greatest ever and you will have a certain percentage of the public who will buy it...

I think motor oil is the same....

So I called three oil companies to get their VOA on their 5w-20 oils and ask their opinions on zinc and phosphorus and calcium levels on passenger cars and light trucks..
I enjoy the VOA's on here, but different labs vary so much..

Dave from Redline was very open and cordial. He was free to give any numbers that I asked for.. He also said that it is high phosphorus that is a concern and not high zinc in newer engines.

The Redline 5w20 has a phosphorus level of 1375 ppm says Dave and that is not high enough to cause concern in today's engines as per Dave...
I called Castrol for info and they said that they do not make public their figures...

I called Mobil and they said that they only state the Zinc and Phosphorus levels of their oil...

Why all the secrecy especially with Castrol...?

Tell me about it! I called and asked a simple and harmless question, and they stonewalled and refused to answer, no matter how many times I rephrased it. I gave up and hung up. Terrible.

Big corporation in this country will ALWAYS dispute transparency.
In my experience the boutique company's will have a discussion with you about there oil(AMSOIL, Sheaffer's, Redline)

BC BP do not wish any competitor to advertise their "stuff" is "more" and "better" than BP's. Moot as this is 70s oil tech and mostly irrelevant for PCMO nowadays - many new AW/EP are not earth metal compounds and "invisible" to rudimentary analysis.

PCMO PHOSPHORUS (as a compound) is limited by its spec limits to 600-800ppm elemental.

New polymer esters and base oil polymers have been added as ZDDP has been reduced.

Dave from RL is awesome, don't expect to be treated like he treated you anywhere else. You'll get a lot of canned replies, and sometimes very creative B_S telling you absolutely nothing. Been there done that.

Oil companies I believe just want to keep things under wraps so their competitors don't know what they're doing.
I suppose if you really wanted to know what was in a castrol oil bottle, you'd have to do a virgin UOA on it to find out. (meaning oil wasn't used in an engine, just bottle to testing).

Do you suppose Redline was so open because they don't follow API standards and also don't have the API certification star on any of their products (neither does Amsoil or RP). Which means to me, they're product more than likely should have more additive(s) than what API mandates, and since it's more, API won't certify it.
In Redline's case, the more honest & open they are, the more loyalty they can acquire. People usually stick with those who are more than willing to help with no strings attached.

Amsoil OE and XL are both API certified....
AND according to PQIA AMSOIL Signature Series zinc and phos are well within the standard ranges...?

Definitely not the reason it isn't certified... sorry

The worst one is the " *insert brand here* is the factory fill for blah blah blah,etc". Completely dodging the question. I couldn't care less what car co feels the need to pay an oil co to be privilidged enough to stamp their logo on their oil fill cap.

I didn't realize it was offensive at all...sorry if it is...it was a nick-name from college based on a lot of things that had nothing to do with being offensive...

I apologize if I offended anyone...don't know how I could have, but society is different today..

Anyway, carry on with the main topic. I was just pointing out that the forum software considered it inappropriate, not me personally. Only after I saw that the forum is censoring your name did I google it and found out what it means (can mean) for myself. I did not know either. But now that I know, I understand why the forum censored it. I must admit, this forum censors some really odd stuff, among others.
