Quick question on these things. If you look at most wix filters, they have that front bypass valve assy with, and something that is similar to a adbv inside of it. Aside from those filters, are all other filter designs the button valve design such as what you would see on most Purolators? I've noticed that while looking at many filters that they don't all have the same looking valve in the end. Some of them have a metal cap thing sticking out into the filter, and others have what looks like a round disc or washer with a rivet in the center. Do all of those style filters operate with the risk of have bypassed oil run over the dirty side of the filter element and back into the engine? And if that is the case, is there really a problem with the oil flow picking up particles and running them back through the engine?

I don't see it as a problem unless the filter is HUGELY loaded up with debris. Have you ever opened up a filter and looked where the debris collects? It collects way deep down inside the pleat next to the center core. If a bypass valve located on the dome end opened up, I don't think the oil is going to cause any of the deep down trapped debris to move. And also, when a filter goes into bypass there is still flow going through the media which will hold the debris in place due to the flow pressure.
The location of the bypass valve isn't really a concern to me anyway. If it was a big deal, you'd see a lot more filters made with a base end bypass valve.

True ... that's why I kind of gave up on WIX & NAPA Golds.

Today I cut open the Mobil 1 oil filter that was on my boat last season (this would be a FL-1A Ford 302 style filter) and the threaded end bypass was actually built into the filter end cap, and looked like it did not take up as much space as the Wix design. I'm not sure if anyone else uses this same style.
