Filter Bypass valve Question

When the bypass valve is activated in the filter is it a gradual opening or is this a thing where you have full bypass or no bypass?

Does it bypass some dirty oil but some still gets filtered or does it bypass all or almost all oil unfiltered?

I just read your post wrong... I see what kind of by-pass you were talking about.

Depends on the filter design... Sometimes you have partial by-pass, sometimes full by-pass and it just lets the oil through un-filtered.

I thought the normal bypass system just opens a direct path back into the engine bypassing any filtering in case the filter is plugged or causing too much restriction.

The BP valve works off of the differential pressure accross the element. The greater the differential pressure accross the element the more the valve opens. It is not an all or nothing operation, unless something "clogs" the element (cold oil at startup for instance). The second part of your question is correct.
