It's a Mobil website, not GM's.

Just sayin

Yes Yes...all you have said is true & valid...luckily I know not to use motor flush (although I have before in my old camaro with no issues but it is risky cause it killes the lubrication), but otherwise I see all your points & we think alike.

On my g/f Pontiac she has the 3.6L VVT and manual says dino, but that same engine in a Cadillac uses Mobil-1.

If it was my TransAm I would use 5w30 PP most likely up in your climate. It really depends on how hard you drive it & how long of an oil change interval you wish to go

I spend more time in the oil isle than i do shopping around walmart.

I too find it hard to choose an oil as I want to try something different.

To curb this curiousity I bought Quakerstate HP when there was the $10 promotion going on(2 5qt's for $16). Bought 2 PP 5QT jugs.

I'm now down to 1 5QT QSHP, and My PP mix(.5QT QSHP, 1.5QT Synpower, and 1.5QT PP). Thats for my next fill in 2k miles on my Xterra.

I wanted to to buy some MotorCraft 5w30, but the only 5QT jug they have is the 5w20, and i'm not to keen on putting it in my Xterra.

OK I can buy the argument that Corvettes run hotter due to the space issues. However, these engines are still crammed into the F-Body's pretty good. Not sure if the F-body has an oil cooler or not though. I think the LT1 cars did but I don't remember seeing one on my car. I haven't made it a point to look for it either so it very well could be there.

I had a feeling alot of it was just "marketing." "Look our car requires synthetic oil just like the German cars! It must be as good or better than theirs!"

That and they figure they can wring some extra money out of Corvette drivers.

I'm definetly happy with Maxlife oil. That's why I ultimately went with it. I did notice today that the oil pressure is a tad lower at idle when hot than it was with the PP. I was running 5w-30 with the PP. I may go back to that next oil change. I'll be doing a UOA on this oil when I change it. Who knows when that will be. Debating between a 4,500 mile change or just do it when the OLM pops up.

Drew I would use the Full Synth Maxlife if I could find it! It's not stocked anywhere around here and stupid expensive to order.

i have never seen an oil cooler on a 98-02 fbody, unless it is hidden internal somewhere.
i'm going through the same thing as you, haha. as for GM sounds like they put the expensive oils in the expensive cars (people with expensive cars generally will spend alot more on their oil), and say whatever to the rest.

as for the LS1, i have heard many running 0w-30 german castrol with good results.

your ticking is either piston slap or lifters. ive heard it not uncommon for different oils to have different effects on both.

"Too many mind." (obscure Last Samuri quote...)

When I actually have to buy oil and not just stand and look, I make the decision before I even get there. I keep my eyes in check while I'm there, and get the heck out after it's in my hand. No problem.

the 4th gen F-bodies have no factory oil coolers, not even the 1LE or police packages...i guess our cooling system is pretty stout for anything but road racing. the 3rd gen IROCs had it on the police and 1LE and option KC4

maxlife is actually a thicker oil than PP 5W-30 11.5 vs. 10.3 100 C

When I go to Wal-Mart, AutoZone, or O’Reilly I sometimes buy filters that are not for my vehicles and oil that I don’t even use!!!!!!!
When some pretty yellow, red or blue bottle of oil is on sale and you get a rebate on the filter too boot… It is so hard to resist..... So, I start thinking my son and his wife need these for their cars!!!! I buy them filters and oil all the time, sort of like buying starving people from a third-world nation food…. Oh how proud that makes me, but my son is to the point whereas he hardly says thanks anymore…… He sometimes says, “Pops I just changed my oil last week remember”? I then reply why #@%# no!!! Help me I am In Bondage……….hahahahaha….. I think I will run to Wal-Mart tonight.....

I think I made a mistake in using Max life 5w-20 and my car wasn't past 75k, it was closer t0 72k. Isn't Maxlife beneficial most for cars past 100 and even 125k?? Also, I feel I made a mistake in terms of this oil not giving me as good gas mileage as Ford MC. I do have low air in my rear right tire but that couldn't account for 3-4 mpg could it? I am contemplating abandoning ML and going back to Ford Motorcraft from Wal-Mart with either a ST or MC oil filter on my next OCI.

ya it could, little more city driving, low air, more AC etc

maxlife made my MPG go down 1/10th of a mile as compared to Pennzoil HM...it is thicker and has more moly & stuff. If you have no leaks I would run a non-HM oil. I use it in my cars but on one I have leaks and the other i HAVE LEAKS & hm

How true, you can't look away and your fix is as close as your closest Wal-Mart, Pep Boys, etc - you pick a store. How about this BITOG definition of PORN: Petroleum Obsessed Research Necessary (for gratification).

Just wonderin'......

My 01 Sunfire has started burning/leaking oil. Thought I would try a heavier weight in the summer to see how it did. My thinking is the rings are a bit toasted from all the drag racing I did with it.
